Edwards' ex-mistress gets ownership of sex tape

By NBC, msnbc.com staff and news services

Former U.S. Democratic presidential hopeful and former U.S. Senator John Edwards.

Updated at 6:27 p.m. ET: HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. -- John Edwards' former mistress has settled a lawsuit and won ownership of a?purported sex tape of the?former presidential candidate during his bid for the White House.

Copies of?the tape will be destroyed within 30 days, The Associated Press reported.

A spokesperson for Rielle Hunter told ABC11 the agreement returns the "disputed property" to Hunter and declared the settlement a victory.

"Ms. Hunter is very pleased. She won," RoseMarie Terenzio told WTVD-TV in Raleigh.

Hunter filed suit against a former Edwards aide, Andrew Young, in 2010 over ownership of several items, including a purported sex video that Hunter claimed she made in 2006 while working for Edwards.

Rielle Hunter and her child leave the Terry Sanford Federal Building and Courthouse in Raleigh, N.C

Hunter lived with the Youngs in 2007, while she was pregnant with Edwards' baby.

In a court settlement filed Thursday, the Youngs agreed to give up their claim on the property, which has been held in the vault of a North Carolina courthouse. The Youngs also agreed not to talk publicly about the tape or the other items, which include photos of Hunter with the child and a list of names titled "The Slut Club."

"We are extremely pleased to have this case resolved. There were no 'winners' as such, in that each side had returned back to it that which it believed was its own property, although it was mutually agreed that certain materials should, per the court's order, be destroyed," the Youngs said in a statement.

"It has been suggested that one purpose of this lawsuit was an effort to intimidate and harass Andrew and Cheri Young who are expected to be witnesses in the criminal prosecution of Ms. Hunter's paramour, John Edwards. If that was in fact the case, it has failed miserably," the statement said.

"Notably, notwithstanding the outlandish efforts of Ms. Hunter's legal counsel to try to paint Mr. and Mrs. Young as liars and thieves, nothing could be further from the truth -- as is unequivocally evidenced by this settlement agreement."

Andrew Young previously described the intimate tape in his tell-all book about how Edwards hid his mistress and child amid the 2008 White House campaign.

The settlement does not address a pending contempt of court case against the Youngs and two of their attorneys for providing copies of items that had been under seal to federal officials investigating Edwards for campaign finance violations.

Edwards was indicted on six felony and misdemeanor counts last year related to nearly $1 million provided by two wealthy donors that was used to help hide his mistress from the public. Edwards served a single term in the U.S. Senate before becoming the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2004.

The many fiscal wonders of cruise control

Cruise control increases your fuel efficiency and reduces your chances of a speeding ticket, saving you loads of money.

A few years ago, I was pulled over for going 61 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour zone. I mumbled and grumbled to myself as the officer went back to his car and wrote me a ticket. Instantly, over $100 went down the tubes, and that doesn?t include the bump in insurance rates.

Skip to next paragraph Trent Hamm

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

Recent posts

Sure, the officer was probably filling a ticket quota. That doesn?t change the fact that you can get hit with a speeding ticket at any time if you?re going over the speed limit.

Add on top of that the fact that most cars use fuel most efficiency when going at about 55 miles per hour, and a plan for cost-effective driving starts to become clear. Stick to the speed limit as much as you can.

Let?s start with pure fuel efficiency. According to the link above, ?You can assume that each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.28 per gallon for gas.?

So, let?s examine a car that gets 20 miles per gallon when you drive optimally. Let?s say you?re going on a 180 mile trip, meaning you?ll normally gobble up nine gallons of gas if you?re going 60 miles per hour.

Turn the speed up to 65 miles per hour and you save about 14 minutes. However, you?re eating up $2.52 in extra gas. You?re essentially saving $10.80 per hour ? and that?s after taxes ? by driving 5 miles per hour slower. That?s just counting the fuel efficiency part of the equation.

On top of fuel efficiency, you have the risk of getting pulled over if you?re going over the speed limit. Getting a ticket is something of a random event. You could speed with reckless abandon and not get a ticket for years, or you could get two tickets on a single three hour road trip (I?ve seen it happen). When you get a ticket, not only will it cost you a significant amount for the ticket, it will also have an impact on your future auto insurance rates.

On top of that, speeding puts additional wear and tear on your vehicle. From increased wear on your brake pads from having to slow from a higher speed to additional wear on your engine from the greater usage,

$10.80 per hour is a severe underestimation of your savings from keeping your speed under control.

The challenge I have with securing this savings is that? well, I tend to have a lead foot. If I?m driving along a boring two lane road or a long stretch of interstate, I tend to gradually go faster? and faster? and faster.

My solution for that is to simply use the cruise control. I turn it on for every flat and straight segment of road I?m on. I flip it off for significant curves or significant hills, as I slow down for the curves and uphill segments and allow myself to pick up that speed again when going downhill.

The savings I rack up from simply keeping my accelerator under control ? the gas savings, the maintenance savings, and the avoidance of speeding tickets ? makes it well worth the extra few minutes spent on the road.

This post is part of a yearlong series called ?365 Ways to Live Cheap (Revisited),? in which I?m revisiting the entries from my book ?365 Ways to Live Cheap,? which is available at Amazon and at bookstores everywhere.

Nutrition Tips Guaranteed for Life | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

There is nothing on earth quite like the human body. The body can perform magnificent athletic feats and quickly heal from foreign germs. To properly work, your body requires a nutritious diet. This article will provide you with advice on how to maintain proper nutrition through your diet.

?Net carbs? is a term you may have heard before. But are you aware of its meaning? It is possible to determine the net carbs of a given serving of food by subtracting the amount of fiber from the total amount of carbohydrates. As an example, if a serving of granola contains 23 grams of carbs and six grams of fiber, then the net carb value of the serving of granola is 17 total.

Food poisoning is more common that most of us realize, and the symptoms can be very uncomfortable. There are definitely several ways to make sure your family stays safe. You should make sure to clean your hands before and after you finish cooking. Be careful to keep your raw meats away from other foods, especially fresh foods. It is also critical to thoroughly cook your foods. You can use the temperature of the food to tell you if it is done. Always keep leftovers in the fridge.

You need to try to understand the food labels. Many items that claim to be fat-free or sugar-free appear to be healthy choices, but many times, they have other health issues that make them less than nutritious for you. Similarly, a product labeled low-carb and low-sugar may be high in fat and high in calories. The nutrition label should provide you with the information you need.

Typical breakfast fare like donuts, pastries and muffins are laden with fat and sugar. Instead, opt for lower fat choices like oatmeal and fresh fruit. What you eat first thing in the morning often influences how you will eat the rest of the day. Never forget this, and make sure you select healthy food options for breakfast to start your day off right.

Try filling up on salad or water-based soup before your main course to help reduce your appetite. Your stomach will be partially filled after you eat the soup or salad, so you will eat less than you would have eaten without consuming an appetizer.

Making children eat everything on their plate leads to bad habits and overeating. It is more effective for you to ask your child to try a little of everything and then stop when they are full. Using food bribes to make your child finish the food on their plate is not a good idea either. By instilling smart choices and patterns in your child now, they will build good habits that they will use for life.

Not all fruit is created equal. Some of these, such as bananas, contain starches that really don?t benefit you nutritionally. To meet your daily nutritional level, you will need to eat a variety of fruits in addition to your banana.

Would you like to be in shape? If so, you must take care to eat healthy foods! Think about the food you eat! The use of fats and oils should be minimized as much as possible. When using oil, choose olive oil or peanut oil, which are both extremely healthful and good for the heart and central nervous system. A moderate amount of fish is also essential to your diet.

With just a little planning, you can easily eat more nutritious foods and improve your health. Age is but a number when it comes to looking and feeling your best. For your health, put the tips listed above into practice.

Romney takes on world as he vies for presidency

(AP) ? The world according to Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney: Europeans are socialists. The Chinese are currency manipulators. Russia can't be trusted to abide by nuclear agreements. The Palestinians are out to destroy Israel. And the U.S. is too generous with humanitarian aid.

It often appears that Romney is targeting the rest of the world as fiercely as he does his rivals for the party nomination and President Barack Obama. It's not just expected foils like Iran that are in his line of attack. He takes aim at European allies, who are seen as slipping the capitalist leash.

The tough talk drives home Romney's criticism that Obama is an apologist for America, soft on its enemies and too forgiving of its friends. It's a message that might resonate with Republican voters, who sometimes tend to be wary of the rest of the world.

It also raises questions about whether the rhetoric could damage U.S. relations abroad in the event that the former venture capitalist and Massachusetts governor wins the White House.

A Romney foreign policy adviser discounts any potential problems.

"Other governments are not naive, and they understand the rough-and-tumble of U.S. politics just as we understand the rough-and-tumble of politics in other countries," said former Ambassador Richard Williamson, who held many top diplomatic jobs in Republican administrations.

That's true, but only so far, said John Pantzalis, a professor and expert in international relations at Florida's St. Leo University.

"If he repeats these things when he gets to a debate with Obama, that would create problems," Pantzalis said, adding that at this stage of the campaign, "he can get away with it."

Romney's two main rivals, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich, take similar tough stands on foreign policy. They all portray Obama as soft on American enemies, glossing over the president's order for the risky mission that killed Osama bin Laden and a policy that has wiped out much of the al-Qaida leadership cadre.

But Romney's views are particularly noteworthy because he remains the favorite in the Republican race despite losses in recent nominating contests and a surge by Santorum in some polls. He has a big advantage in money and organization and an early lead in delegates who will ultimately determine the party's nominee.

The economy, not foreign affairs, has dominated the presidential race. But sometimes the two issues overlap. Romney says China's monetary policies have hurt Americans and has promised that on the first day as president, he would designate China a currency manipulator, subjecting it to sanctions.

Pantzalis cautioned Romney on his China remarks, especially with the communist giant and No. 2 world economy about to go through a leadership change.

"The Chinese have become incredibly nationalistic," Pantzalis said. "There is a major danger of messing up relations with China with hardline rhetoric later in the campaign, especially with a new leader trying to consolidate his power and prove his strength."

Romney described this week's meetings in Washington between Obama and the likely new leader, Vice President Xi Jinping, as "empty pomp and ceremony." In a column published in The Wall Street Journal, Romney wrote: "A nation that represses its own people cannot ultimately be a trusted partner in an international system based on economic and political freedom."

Among Romney's foreign affairs comments:

?Obama's "worst foreign policy mistake yet" was signing a new treaty with Russia to limit nuclear arsenals further.

?The Palestinians are out to destroy Israel, not negotiate their way to a peaceful two-state solution.

?The U.S. should cut humanitarian aid ? and China should pick up the slack.

Romney's tough stance on illegal immigration is unlikely to garner much favor in Latin America, the source of most of the immigrants. The position comes despite Romney's family history: His father was born in Mexico and the candidate has relatives there.

Romney's criticism of Obama's Iran policy is particularly relevant as the administration scrambles to head off a feared Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear installations.

Obama says he's not ruled out using military force, but he has not been so directly threatening. Romney takes a far harder line and says he would stand much closer to Israel.

As if to draw a line under his Iran policy, Romney said in one Republican debate: "If we re-elect Barack Obama, Iran will have a nuclear weapon. And if we elect Mitt Romney, if you elect me as the next president, they will not have a nuclear weapon."

In U.S. presidential elections, it remains axiomatic that a candidate trying to win a party's nomination plays more to the extremes when seeking a place on the ballot and then charts a more moderate course in the final election campaign. Even at that, however, history teaches that it often is far easier to make campaign promises than to fulfill them once in office.

Just ask Obama, who vowed he would close the U.S. military prison for terrorist suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, during his first year in office. That still hasn't happened ? Congress has stood in the way of such action ? and the pledge lives on mostly as an issue the Republicans use against the president."

Posted on February 13th, 2012 PalmaShanon898

For some years now, the word has been spreading about the multitude of benefits of green tea, but there?s quite a lot that many people don?t realize about this healthy tea. While the Asian peoples have been aware of its healthy properties for over a thousand years, it is extremely young here in the West. Even though it?s a drink that can be very good to drink as a beverage, what matters the most is that it is so healthy for you. What we will do now is share a few of the very many healthy reasons to make green tea part of your daily life.

Believe it or not, but green tea has stimulant properties that are not as harsh as found in coffee and the popular high energy quick fixes being sold, today. Lots of people get too much stimulation from coffee, and that is what can make green tea a viable alternative. Along similar lines, this tea is very helpful and useful for increasing your metabolism in a healthy way, and therefore is great for those who are trying to lose weight. Coffee has roughly twice as much caffeine as green tea. Some energy drinks are even higher in caffeine, and this often has adverse effects on people. So if you want a drink that is stimulating, but not over-whelming, then green tea is worth trying.

Millions of people have arthritis and other bone/joint diseases, and green tea has been implicated as having healthy qualities for those conditions. Green tea has anti-inflammatory properties and many important antioxidants, which are beneficial to the whole body, including the bones. This means that regular consumption of green tea can help to prevent such conditions and, for people who already have them, help to control the painful symptoms.

Anything that can contribute to reducing the overall symptons, as well as offering other healthy benefits, should be seriously considered.

For infections and bacteria related problems, the catechins found in green tea?s antioxidants are great for these conditions. The antioxidants found in green tea would be helpful in food poisoning situations, as well. So consuming this beneficial food can actually help you avoid the damage done by toxic substances. Try to practice the standard precautions you probably already know about and do. A lot is know about green tea while there is much that still needs to be understood and discovered. Fortunately, this is a natural food that you can enjoy in many different forms. You don?t need to get tired of drinking green tea because it can be consumed in other form such as capsules. Ok, so how much do you need to extract the healthy benefits? Roughly about 2-3 cups of green tea each day will be excellent for you. Perhaps you will begin to make green tea a part of your regular day, and it will only help make and keep you healthier.

We hope you have enjoyed reading about the many benefits of green tea. This food is flexible because you can take it as capsule, other food alternatives, and of course drink the tea. Yes, the more you enjoy green tea, then the more your body will enjoy the healthy support it offers.

The Pearls Are Mine! | China Antiques

Marky Olson, a 63-year-old Seattle blogger, hit rock bottom the day she sneaked eight photo albums out of her parents? apartment and chucked them in a dumpster.

Already, she had spent two years trying to make a dent in the stuff crammed into her parents? two-car garage at their retirement villa, finding a home for a boat, model trains and other objects large and small.

An estate sale in Memphis, Tenn.: Liquidators can charge 25% to 35%.

After her parents moved to an assisted-living facility and had to cull again, Ms. Olson reached her breaking point. A nurse tried to stop her, but she jettisoned the photos anyway.

?I just couldn?t handle dealing with all the stuff anymore,? she says.

As older parents approach death, they often leave lengthy to-do lists for their children. The tasks can be both physical and financial. Some children must deal with a tangle of arrangements?everything from heating-oil contracts to trusts?along with jumbled stock certificates, car titles or life-insurance policies for which there may be no backup copies. Others must sift through boxes or rooms full of belongings. Sometimes siblings get involved, complicating matters further.

When the chores become overwhelming, it can be difficult for family members to recover sentimental treasures or tie up financial loose ends. At the extreme, the sheer volume of stuff can clutter a house and weigh down its value?a problem if the home must be sold quickly.

It used to be much easier to dispose of estates, experts say. But the slow recovery from the recession has softened the market for antiques and collectibles drastically, according to more than a dozen professionals who handle estate sales and elderly moves. People have curtailed recreational shopping and aren?t moving into bigger homes, stifling demand for furnishings. At the same time, younger homeowners? decorating tastes have changed in the past decade or so away from the traditional furniture, formal china and silver tea sets found in many older homes.

Julie Hall, an estate liquidator in Charlotte, N.C., says she is seeing people eschew stately grandfather clocks for utilitarian items?even cleaning supplies?they can pick up for cheap.

Here is how to deal with your parents? stuff while preserving family harmony and finances.

Go Slow?but Don?t Stall Out

When a loved one dies, it is especially difficult to start sorting through his or her stuff quickly. Many families, hoping to avoid getting bogged down, hire a liquidator to clear out everything fast.

On the other hand, if your financial situation allows it, taking some time can help you deal with your grief. Arleen Stern, a geriatric-care manager in New York, spent four months with her family emptying her mother-in-law?s apartment after she died. ?She was a Holocaust survivor, and she saved everything,? Ms. Stern says. ?It let us reminisce about her life, and that?s a very important way for people to spend time together after a recent loss.?

The trick is to avoid stalling out?or becoming too paralyzed to start. Adult children inheriting a home could wind up on the hook for bills if the estate isn?t settled yet.

Jada Krall, a 41-year-old hospice nurse in Tampa, Fla., says that for several months last year she ignored the task of emptying her parents? 3,000-square-foot, four-bedroom home in Charlotte. ?I just couldn?t wrap my head around it,? she says. Meanwhile, she and her brother had to pay the mortgage and other bills themselves.

When Ms. Krall hired an attorney to help her handle the estate, he urged her to hurry up and sell the house to stop the financial bleeding.

A real-estate agent connected her with Ms. Hall, the estate liquidator. In three days, Ms. Hall emptied the house, sending valuable pieces to an auction house. They didn?t bring much. Even an antique pump organ that Ms. Krall?s mother had painstakingly restored fetched only $125 at auction, she says: ?I was shocked at how little things brought. You think that house is full of so much value, but in this economy it?s not.?

Many Different Options

Long-distance families, sibling rivalries and time pressure all are reasons to consider bringing in professionals to help sift through family belongings.

The question is which type of professional is best suited for your situation.

Estate liquidators, auction houses and consignors typically charge a percentage of the contents? sale price?often 25% to 35%. Liquidators are the most likely to act as a one-stop shop, and they may bill in different ways for different services. Ms. Hall, for example, charges a percentage of the items that sell, and also an hourly rate starting at $110 for appraisals, clean-outs, and shipping items to auctioneers or charity. The American Society of Estate Liquidators (ASELonline.com), which she runs, provides local referrals.

If you want to sell select items and handle the disposal yourself, you could hire an auctioneer, preferably one who knows your specific merchandise and works well on the Internet, says Susan Devaney, owner of Moving Mavins in Westfield, N.J.

Consignment shops typically charge up to a 50% commission and put an item on their sales floor for 30 days. Find out upfront what happens if it hasn?t sold at that point. You might have 24 hours to a week to come get it?and if you don?t, it is theirs, warns John Buckles, president of Caring Transitions, a network of senior movers and estate-sale businesses.

Senior-move managers and professional organizers charge an hourly rate but typically offer more customized help. They can tap movers, reputable resellers, and auctioneers and charities willing to take books, clothing and home furnishings.

Their rates range from $40 to upward of $125 an hour, depending on where you live and the complexity of the job. Movers and organizers who have joined trade groups that provide training can be found at nasmm.org, napo.net and MoveSeniors.com.

Charles Naftalin, a partner at law firm Holland Knight in Washington, hired Transitional Assistance Design, a senior-move management company in Gaithersburg, Md., after his father died, and it quickly emptied his parents? century-old Victorian house?including 20,000 books.

?We had a deadline,? he says. ?We put the house up for sale, and my mom was moving to a one-bedroom apartment.? Mr. Naftalin says he was amazed at how much they accomplished so quickly. He hired the same mover when his mother moved from the apartment to an assisted-living facility.

Take Care of Financial Matters Quickly

In addition to dealing with the furniture and dishes, don?t forget to track down bills for monthly utilities, cancel credit cards, figure out if anything was on auto-pay from bank accounts that may be closed and tie up other bill-paying loose ends. Otherwise, the estate could end up paying late fees or bills for services no one is using?and if the estate hasn?t been settled yet, you could wind up on the hook for some of the charges ranging from utility bills and lawn service to homeowners? association fees.

The same applies when your parents move to a long-term-care facility. When Jean Dorrell, a Summerfield, Fla., estate planner, traveled to Texas to clean out her father?s home after he moved to an assisted-living facility, she found stacks of mail and soon figured out that he was having $460 a month deducted from his bank account for magazine subscriptions and other purchases?a third of his monthly income.

Financial records can be particularly daunting. Caroline Yates, a homemaker in Rochester, N.Y., served as power-of-attorney for her octogenarian great uncle. She had to make room in his Westfield, N.J., home for health-care aides before a rehab center would release him, following an illness in 2010.

But she had to be careful not to throw out any uncashed checks or stock-sale records, since he had run a small financial business from his home with no computer records. After his death last year, she went through 16 filing cabinets searching for a set of stock certificates?before finding them in a bank safe-deposit box. She wound up hiring Ms. Devaney?s firm to help her clean out the house and sift through the important records.

Dole Out the Heirlooms Diplomatically

Some of the biggest family feuds erupt over the division of day-to-day objects. Those fights can become financial headaches if they hold up the settlement of the estate or, worse yet, drag the family into court.

The most foolproof strategy also is the most awkward: Parents and children discussing what the children will get while the parents are still alive and well, says Marlene Stum, a professor at the University of Minnesota who heads its ?Who Gets Grandma?s Yellow Pie Plate?? project.

Aging parents and adult children often don?t realize which objects really matter to one another. Children might not know how the parents wound up with various heirlooms, and the stories might justify keeping what might otherwise seem like junk.

For their part, parents often are surprised to learn their children are more interested in everyday objects used while they were growing up?a pie plate or serving platter?than a coin collection with some monetary value, says Prof. Stum.

But what if a parent dies without talking with the children? First, the siblings need to agree on who is in charge, be it a family member or a professional, and give that person final say, advises Robert Spielman, an estate-planning lawyer and certified public accountant with Marcum LLP in Melville, N.Y. Next, they should determine who was promised something and who wants something that was important to him or her.

After that, they should consider giving everyone color-coded stickers to put on things they want, along with a number ranking it, and list it on a spreadsheet.

?By indicating how important a particular thing is to you in a way that everybody else can see, you?re much more likely to compromise,? says Francine Russo, author of ?They?re Your Parents, Too!?

Document Deductions

Next comes the liquidation part. One option that can ease the emotional sting: making donations to charity. Doing so when your parents downsize ?can make mom and dad feel good about who will get their stuff,? Mr. Buckles says.

After the second parent?s death, family members should choose the possessions they want, Mr. Spielman says. Next, the estate?s executor sells, or hires someone to sell, everything possible. (If the estate is taxable, estate tax is owed on those assets, whether or not they are sold.)

The children, as the heirs, typically get what is left after any tax is paid. They also get to claim a tax deduction for the fair-market value of any stuff donated to charity on the date of the donation, according to Mr. Spielman.

For donations, the Internal Revenue Service requires the item to be in good condition, and that you get a receipt.

?If the people at the Salvation Army think it?s worth $8,000, get a receipt for $8,000,? Ms. Dorrell says. ?Your [accountant] can bring that number down if he needs to, but he can?t bring it higher.?

The IRS, Salvation Army and Goodwill Industries all post lists of suggested values on their websites. But if you have a higher-value item, such as designer clothing, take a digital photo to document it, Ms. Devaney advises.

Donations worth more than the IRS limit may require a formal appraisal, Mr. Spielman says.

Women abandon Gingrich, drive Romney victory in FL

(AP) ? Women abandoned Newt Gingrich in droves Tuesday and helped fuel former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's triumph in Florida's Republican presidential primary, according to data from an exit poll of voters.

Romney also drew strength from Florida's legion of older voters, Hispanics and two staples among GOP voters in presidential contests so far ? those looking for someone to defeat President Barack Obama and people focused on the still flagging economy.

While Romney bested the former House speaker narrowly among men, he strongly outdistanced him among women, winning 52 percent to 28 percent. In the three states in which Republicans had already voted for their presidential nominee ? Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina ? there was relatively little difference in how the sexes divided their votes between the two rivals.

Romney's Florida triumph came after a campaign in which he and his supporters outspent Gingrich on television commercials by nearly 5-1, with many of the ads attacking the former speaker's character. None mentioned Gingrich's three marriages or the charges by his second wife, Marianne, that he asked permission for an open marriage before they were divorced, an allegation Gingrich has denied.

Romney prevailed over Gingrich among women across every category of education and income, underscoring the sweep with which they preferred Romney.

Some of the data from Tuesday's exit poll suggested that many women's votes were influenced more by a personal distaste for Gingrich than by liking Romney. Asked their views of Gingrich as a person, men said they generally viewed him favorably by 62 percent to 34 percent, but women were about evenly divided. In contrast, women expressed stronger positive feelings about Romney as a person than men did, but the difference between them was minor.

Among all voters on Tuesday, 55 percent expressed favorable views of Gingrich personally, compared to 77 percent who said the same about Romney.

Men divided about evenly between Gingrich and Romney over which candidate best understood average Americans' problems, but women leaned toward Romney, 38 percent to 26 percent. Men said strongly that they would be satisfied if Gingrich won the nomination, while women said yes by just a slight 51 percent to 46 percent.

About 1 in 7 GOP primary voters Tuesday was Hispanic, and that group preferred Romney, 54 percent to 29 percent. About a third of Tuesday's voters were age 65 or up ? reflecting the state's status as a retirement haven ? and they gave Romney an edge, 51 percent to 34 percent.

The exit poll also showed that Romney did better with less conservative than more conservative people.

Gingrich prevailed by about a 4-3 margin among those saying they are very conservative and those calling themselves strong supporters of the tea party. Romney had a decisive edge among everyone else.

Around 6 in 10 Florida GOP voters said the economy was their biggest issue, a sentiment expressed by GOP voters in each state so far. They preferred Romney 52 percent to 30 percent. Romney has prevailed among such voters in every state but South Carolina, where Gingrich was victorious on Jan. 21.

Among the nearly half who said they most wanted a candidate who can oust Obama in November's voting, Romney easily topped Gingrich on Tuesday by 58 percent to 33 percent.

Though Romney won among every income category overall, he did better among higher-income voters than those on the lower economic rungs.

Gingrich managed to split with Romney the one quarter of voters who said they are falling behind economically. And Gingrich did better among the half of voters who said home foreclosures are a major problem in their communities than he did among those who said it wasn't so bad.

Early voters also gave Romney more of an edge. Those who voted early or by absentee ballot backed Romney by around a 2-1 majority, a stronger edge than he won among those at the polling places on Tuesday. Before Tuesday's voting, analysts thought Gingrich might pick up some late momentum in Florida because of his victory in South Carolina's Jan. 21 GOP primary.

The survey of 2,835 voters Republican voters was conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks by Edison Research. This includes preliminary results among 2,235 voters interviewed Tuesday as they left their polling places at 40 randomly selected sites in Florida. In addition, 600 who voted early or absentee were interviewed by landline or cellular telephone from Jan. 23 to 29. The survey has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Sudan: Army frees some abducted Chinese workers (AP)

KHARTOUM, Sudan ? The Sudanese army has freed 14 Chinese road construction workers, part of a group reportedly abducted by militants in a remote region in the country's south, officials said Monday.

The Chinese workers were "liberated" by Sudanese troops and evacuated to the town of El Obeid, Omdurman Radio quoted South Kordofan province's governor Ahmed Haroun on Monday as saying. He said that they were in good health.

The report, which was also carried on the state-run SUNA news agency, did not say when the rescue occurred. Haroun said the army and security forces are trying to free the remaining abducted workers.

It did not say how many workers remained captive, but the Chinese embassy in Khartoum has said that a total of 29 had been taken in the Saturday attack near Abbasiya town in South Kordofan province, some 390 miles (630 kilometers) south of Khartoum.

Sudanese officials have blamed the attack on the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), a branch of a guerrilla movement which has fought various regimes in Khartoum for decades.

Many of the rebels hail from a minority ethnic group now in control of much of South Sudan, which became the world's newest country only six months ago in a breakaway from Sudan. The SPLM northern branch still operates in Sudan.

Sudan has accused South Sudan of arming pro-South Sudan groups in South Kordofan. The government of South Sudan has called such accusations a smoke screen intended to justify a future invasion of the South.

China has sent large numbers of workers to potentially unstable regions such as Sudan and last year was forced to send ships and planes to help with the emergency evacuation of 30,000 of its citizens from the fighting in Libya.

China has consistently used its clout in diplomatic forums such as the United Nations to defend Sudan and its longtime leader Omar al-Bashir. In recent years, it has also sought to build good relations with leaders from the south, where most of Sudan's oil is located.

Chinese companies have also invested heavily in Sudanese oil production.
