Tea party plans to abandon GOP stars
MIAMI (AP) ? This wasn't the revolution the tea party had in mind.
Four years ago, the movement and its potent mix of anger and populism persuaded thousands of costumed and sign-waving conservatives to protest the ballooning deficit and President Obama's health care law. It swept a crop of no-compromise lawmakers into Congress and governor's offices and transformed political up-and-comers, including Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, into household names.
But as many tea party stars seek re-election next year and Rubio considers a 2016 presidential run, conservative activists are finding themselves at a crossroads. Many of their standard-bearers have embraced more moderate positions on bedrock issues such as immigration and health care, broadening their appeal in swing states but dampening grass-roots passion.
"They keep sticking their finger in the eyes of the guys who got them elected," said Ralph King, a co-founder of the Cleveland Tea Party Patriots. "A lot of people are feeling betrayed."
The tea party is a loosely knit web of activists, and some are hoping to rekindle the fire with 2014 primary challenges to wayward Republicans. But many more say they plan to sit out high-profile races in some important swing states next year, a move that GOP leaders fear could imperil the re-election prospects of former tea party luminaries, including the governors of Florida and Ohio.
"It changes the playing field for us," said Tom Gaitens, former Florida director of FreedomWorks, a political action committee that has spent millions of dollars to help tea party candidates. "The most powerful thing we have as a movement is our feet and our vote."
In the summer of 2009, tea party supporters stormed congressional town hall meetings, shouting down lawmakers who had voted for the bank bailout and the stimulus package. The movement's voice grew louder after Democrats passed the health care overhaul, and voters took their outrage to the polls in 2010. The tea party wave stunned Democrats and many moderate Republicans, sweeping the GOP into control of the House and changing the balance of power in many statehouses.
But not long after some tea party stars took office, political analysts said, they were forced to adapt to a changing landscape, particularly in states Obama won in 2012, and to the realities of governing.
The tea party also fell out of favor with many people. At its height after the 2010 elections, a CBS News poll found that 31 percent of those surveyed considered themselves tea party supporters. A May survey found just 24 percent identified with the movement.
Facing sagging approval ratings, tea party Republicans, some of whom were elected by slim margins, shifted tactics.
Fla. Gov. Rick Scott, a former health care company executive who won office by attacking the health law and calling for deep cuts to state spending, has embraced the health law and signed one of the largest budgets in state history, complete with pay raises for teachers. Similarly, Gov. John Kasich, R-Ohio, and Rick Snyder, R-Mich., are battling their GOP-dominated legislatures to expand Medicaid, a big part of the health law.
Tea party supporters were most struck by Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants. His personal story and unlikely rise to power made him perhaps the most prominent figure in the movement.
As a Senate candidate in 2010, he denounced as "amnesty" any plan that would offer a path to citizenship for those who were in the country illegally. Yet in recent months, he has emerged as a leader of a bipartisan Senate group that developed a plan that includes such a provision. The plan has been panned by conservatives but ultimately could bolster Rubio's standing with Hispanics, a growing demographic group that has voted overwhelmingly Democratic in recent years.
One sweltering July day, a half-dozen tea party protesters gathered under a tree in front of Rubio's Miami office, seeking shade as they denounced his support for an immigration overhaul. But the protest soon turned into more of a support group, with the four men and two women grousing to each other about how Rubio had turned into a "back-stabber," a "liar" and a "flip-flopper."
Juan Fiol, a real estate broker who organized the protest, kept looking at his phone, waiting for calls from fellow tea party supporters that never came.
"It was supposed to be a big event," he said as he waved a large "Don't Tread on Me" flag.
The movement's top strategists acknowledge the tea party is quieter today, by design. It has matured, they said, from a protest movement to a political movement. Large-scale rallies have given way to strategic letter-writing and phone-banking campaigns to push or oppose legislative agendas in Washington and state capitals. In Michigan and Ohio, for example, leaders have battled the implementation of the president's health law and the adoption of "Common Core" state school standards.
Local activists say they have focused largely on their own communities since Obama's re-election and the ideological drift of some tea party-backed politicians. Many are running for school boards, county commissions and city councils, focusing on issues such as unfunded pension liabilities and sewer system repairs.
"The positions that people are filling at the local levels are more important for the future of the movement and the future of the country," said Jenny Beth Martin, co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots, a national umbrella organization. "It's creating a farm team for the future."
The Republican establishment, however, is concerned about 2014. Party leaders worry about the GOP's most passionate advocates walking away, particularly those supporters angered by the Senate's immigration bill. In a nod to the tea party, business and conservative groups have launched ad campaigns recasting the bill as a national security measure.
The conservative American Action Network spent $750,000 on pro-reform commercials. One ad aimed at Florida voters called the legislation "the toughest border security plan ever passed by Congress" and urged viewers to thank Rubio for "keeping his promise and fighting to secure the border."
National tea party leaders hope to re-energize followers by focusing on two of the movement's chief targets: the Internal Revenue Service and the health law. They said the Obama administration had handed them a recruiting tool when it delayed the law's implementation and when the IRS singled out tea party groups and other conservative political organizations for special scrutiny.
"The very issues that brought us together in the first place are emerging as more center stage than they were in 2009 and 2010," said Matt Kibbe, president of FreedomWorks. "That animates the political conversation and mobilizes our grass roots going into the 2014 election."
Some Republicans are also moving to repair their relationships with the movement.
Rubio recently spoke to about 50 conservative activists and other lawmakers at a meeting of the Senate's tea party caucus. Organizers said he breezed past immigration, instead devoting much of his speech to repealing the health law.

NRA opens Midwest museum showing nearly 1,000 firearms

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) - The National Rifle Association has opened an elaborate museum in the American Midwest, displaying nearly 1,000 firearms, including those used by French Emperor Napoleon and Hollywood cowboy star John Wayne, along with subtle reminders of the campaign for the right to gun ownership.
The NRA National Sporting Arms Museum opened on Friday at a sprawling Bass Pro Shops outdoor retail store in Springfield, Missouri, a politically conservative central U.S. city that is a gateway to the mountainous Ozarks region popular with tourist and hunters.
Admission is free to the 7,500-square-foot (697-square-metres) museum, which has detailed dioramas and displays that were a decade in the planning stages, said NRA officials.
"If you are a gun person, you are going to love this place," museum director Jim Supica says in an online video promoting the museum as "one of the premier firearms museums in the world."
"These guns came from the NRA collection built over 80 years, but a lot came from special collections that haven't had a place for display," Supica told Reuters in a telephone interview.
The museum is opening as divisions over gun control have widened after the massacre of elementary school children in Newtown, Connecticut in December. President Barack Obama has been rebuffed by Congress in his efforts to tighten gun laws, and the NRA has staunchly opposed gun control.
Prominently featured in the museum are firearms used by historical figures - an engraved shotgun presented by Napoleon Bonaparte to a general in his army, guns from Missouri-born Old West outlaw Jesse James and weapons used in Western movies by tough-guy actors John Wayne and Clint Eastwood.
One of the dioramas shows President Theodore Roosevelt, an outdoor enthusiast and avid hunter, on safari. Another depicts explorers Lewis and Clark, who mapped the vast Louisiana purchase, from St. Louis to the Pacific Coast, in the early 1800s.
The museum incorporates reminders of the NRA mission - to defend the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution setting out the right to bear arms. One of the galleries, named "Second Amendment" includes a copy of the wording in the amendment, Supica said.
Marketing materials touting the museum say it "illustrates themes of hunting, conservation and freedom."
But the museum is "not political," Supica said. It traces the history of guns in America, from the Revolution against British rule in the 18th century.
The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, whose aim is to "enact and enforce sensible gun laws," did not respond to a call and email for comment about the museum.
Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris, who started the hunting and fishing gear business in the early 1970s by making fishing lures, proposed the Missouri location after visiting the NRA's National Firearms Museum in Fairfax, Virginia.
The Bass Pro store in Springfield has about four million visitors annually and is one of the state's top tourist destinations, said Tammy Sapp, Bass Pro spokeswoman.
Like other Bass Pro Shops around the country, the Springfield store has fish and wildlife displays that recreate natural habitats, as well as stuffed and mounted wildlife. Springfield is the privately held retail chain's flagship store.

EnlargeGetting on a plane after having spent the previous twelve hours flying around the world feels like an absurdist endeavor. But even in a non-jetlagged state, I am impervious to kitsch.

So why not spend the night in a hostel built into a decommissioned Boeing 747 located on a non-working runway in Stockholm? You had me at ?significantly cheaper than all the other hotels in the area.?? (A regular visitor to the area, I?ve come to realize that all my Scandinavian travels are accompanied by sticker shock.)
The Jumbo Stay Hostel sits at the edge of Stockholm?s Arlanda Airport, surrounded by a tangle of wildflowers. (Take your Mad Max-like vision and add a twist of Ikea.) As I took the short, free transit-bus ride away from the main terminal, I spent the time questioning my frugally motivated decision. The Swedish, have perfected pop (ABBA), affordable clothing (H&M), and attractive DNA (a percentage of the population too high to tabulate), but aren?t exactly noted for their sense of whimsy.
Decked out in Pan Am blue (the plane was once part of Pan Am's fleet), the interior maintains a strong sense of its former occupation. In the name of both ambiance and functionality, everything about the hostel is small. So much so, most of the twenty-seven rooms are tiny enough to warrant bunk beds and overhead luggage compartments. (The majority come sans bathroom ? although it should be noted that the communal shower/toilet stalls are impeccable.)
I come from a line of vertically unimpressive people. Even so, my head found its way into a fair share of sharp corners, and my spine went crooked attempting to slouch into the caf??s tiny orange chairs. On the upside, there?s an outdoor lounge built onto one of the wings, and numerous porthole-style windows. (This far north, summer sun is meant to be appreciated.)
More space can be bought. Those feeling flush can opt for the cockpit suite ? an upstairs luxury room that features not only the plane?s original navigation instruments, but also an exclusive lounge (complete with plane seats), and patio.
But doing so would be to miss interacting with the hostel?s international blend of visitors. From the small Japanese girl giggling with her parents over breakfast (a blend of cheeses, meets, and breads and jams), to the German backpackers, to the Swiss woman I shared my dorm-style accommodations with, there was an immediate sense of camaraderie.
It may just be one night in one plane, but hey ? Jumbo Stay had a way of reminding us that we?re all in it together.?

5 Great American White-Water Rafting Destinations
August 4, 2013 10:00 AM Text Size: A . A . A White-water rafting can be a great summer escapade, and it's easy to tailor a trip for your crew. For families with young children, a tame river might be the best option. To jolt the teens, rivers akin to crazy roller-coaster rides are the way to go. You can organize a trip to fit any time frame too: overnight outings, day trips, half-day trips, or just an easy float.
First you need to learn the lingo. Here's a quick guide to the kinds of rapids:
? Class I is a nice, gentle ride. This is good for rafters who prefer to float at a leisurely pace.
? Class II involves mild rapids and waves up to 3 feet tall. These rivers are fairly easy to move around in.
? Class III is where the excitement starts to build. There's a good chance of getting wet because waves can be up to 4 feet tall.
? Class IV is not for the faint of heart. Passages are constricted, rapids are long and challenging, and the rafting guide has to operate the craft precisely.
? Class V is like Class IV and then some. It's a pure adrenaline rush.
Some of the best U.S. rivers for a rapids adventures include:
? The American River in California. This river is located in the oak-studded Sierra Nevada foothills. The South Fork of the American River, which flows into the Sacramento River, is a great section for beginners. For a bit more topsy-turvy action, the Middle Fork boasts a mix of Class III and Class IV rapids. It's set in a canyon 2000 feet deep and is surrounded by numerous historic sites from the gold rush era.
? The Colorado River near the Grand Canyon in Arizona. While 4 million people visit the Grand Canyon every year, fewer than 22,000 go white-water rafting in Arizona. Rafters can float through Grand Canyon National Park, starting just below Lake Powell and ending at Lake Mead. This stretch of water offers a mix of Class III and Class IV rapids.
? The Salmon River in Idaho. The Lower and Middle Forks of the Salmon are part of a 100-mile-plus course that has beginner and intermediate rapids. The lower section is especially suited for kids. With milder rapids and sandy beaches, many families love this wildlife adventure.
? The Chattooga River in Georgia and South Carolina. This river features three sections: sections II, III, and IV, which correspond with the class of rapids in each portion. Section II is relaxing. The surroundings are steeped in Native American history and feature an array of wildlife. Section III provides more action and is more challenging, with some serious rapids.
? Youghiogheny River in Pennsylvania. This is a great 74-mile river that's within reach for East Coast residents. Sections of the river are calm enough for small children, offering a relaxing float. Other parts offer up more white-water exploits for intermediate and advanced rafters. Another plus: The season is on the long side, generally lasting from April to September.

Michael Ansara, who played original Klingon, dies
LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The actor who played the original Klingon on TV's "Star Trek" has died.
A longtime friend and spokesman for Michael Ansara says the actor died Wednesday at his home in Calabasas, Calif. after a long illness. He was 91.
Besides playing Kang the Klingon in various "Star Trek" series, Ansara appeared on dozens of TV shows, including "Broken Arrow," ''Law of the Plainsman," ''I Dream of Jeannie," ''Hawaii 5-0" and "Murder, She Wrote."
His film credits include "Julius Caesar," ''Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea," ''The Greatest Story Ever Told" and "The Comancheros" with John Wayne.
Ansara was predeceased by his son, Matthew, with former wife Barbara Eden. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Beverly, a sister and a niece and nephew.

SHANGHAI, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Environmental watchdog groups in China have accused two manufacturing facilities, including Apple supplier Foxconn, of violating water pollution standards.
Five groups, led by activist Ma Jun's Institute of Public & Environmental Affairs, released a film that describes high levels of nickel and copper in the sediment near discharge vents from the Foxconn manufacturing facility near Shanghai, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday. The pollutants are flowing into a river that runs into the Huangpu river, the Journal said.
The other factory named in the film is run by Taiwanese supplier UniMicron Technology Corp.
Foxconn responded to the film by saying it is not the only factory that discharges waste water into the river.
UniMicron did not respond to requests for a comment, the Journal said.
In an interview, Ma said neighbors near the factories have complained about high levels of heavy metal in their land. Some researchers have said as much as 20 percent of China's farmland contains high levels of heavy metals.
China's Ministry of Environmental Protection refused in February to release a pollution study of the country's arable land, calling the information a "state secret."
The China Labor Watch organization this week accused Pegatron Corp., a Taiwanese company that also works for Apple, of discharging pollutants into the Shanghai sewer systems.
The watchdog group said Pegatron was discharging heavy metals into the sewer system of the city of Suzhou.

Obama tees off into birthday weekend with golf
WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is kicking off his birthday weekend with a round of golf at an Air Force base outside Washington.
Obama turns 52 on Sunday.
The president left the White House unusually early on Saturday for the trip to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland to squeeze in some golfing time before heading to Camp David in the afternoon.
The White House said there were three golfing foursomes, including Obama friends from Hawaii and Chicago, and current and former staffers.
Some of Obama's friends are expected to join him at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland's Catoctin Mountains.
Obama is scheduled to return to the White House on Sunday.

Casino development process will be fair says Cairns mayor
THE long regulatory process begins immediately for Tony Fung's $4.2 billion mega-resort proposal and local political leaders insist everyone will have their chance to weigh in on the issue before a sod is turned.
"It's not a case of making the decision today," Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said.
"It's a case of going through this process.
"I expect that we will have a process which is fair, which is open, which is impartial and which should give us the right outcome."
The council will have the ultimate say on Mr Fung's development application as long as the sprawling resort on 343ha of farming land at Yorkeys Knob passes the environmental impact statement process, which it is about to enter.
It took only a week for the co-ordinator general, Barry Broe, to declare "co-ordinated project" status for Mr Fung's proposal. However the Hong Kong developer had been in private talks with the State Government for months.
"He's very conscious to work with the local community," Cairns MP Gavin King said.
"He's very aware of the scale of this project and the impact that it might have on the community. All the way through every meeting we've ever had with him, he's made the very strong point that he respects Far North Queensland."
Mr King said "rational, mature debate" was needed as the project went through the range of regulation that faces a development of its size.
"It's not going to please everybody but it is a project that will transform the Far North Queensland economy."
The resort promises to employ 9300 people during construction and 10,000 once operational.
Cr Manning said the international investment community would be looking at the region with renewed vigour.
"People will say there's something in this tropical north Queensland that we need to go back and re-look at," he said.
Barron River MP Michael Trout, whose electorate takes in the proposed site, said Aquis would do for the region what the Sheraton Mirage once did for Port Douglas.
"Airlines all over the world will point their planes towards Cairns once again," Mr Trout said.
Mr Fung was unavailable for comment yesterday but will return to the Far North this month.

Review: Motorola's Moto X Smartphone | MIT Technology Review
Wake up: The device shows alerts when turned over.
Google-owned Motorola unveiled the Moto X, its new flagship smartphone, in New York City today. The Moto X de?mphasizes manual control, hardware buttons, and the touch screen in favor of always-on sensors built to respond to speech, gestures, and context. And customers will be able to customize many features of the device when they order it.
The phone?s ?touchless control? interface is its biggest innovation. Without switching on the device, simply saying ?Okay Google Now? followed by a command can make a phone place a call, get directions, perform a Google search, or more. The phone?s accelerometer can also tell whether you?re in a moving car and tailor its commands and notifications accordingly.
Since it could be a huge drain on battery life to have sensitive sensors running around the clock, Motorola added two additional tiny processors to the Snapdragon S4 Pro system-on-a-chip. One is for natural language processing, and the other is for ?contextual computing? (in other words, managing all the phone?s other sensors). Both processors are built for extremely low-power use. Motorola designed the processors themselves; they are not built on the ARM architecture, and the company will not disclose who?s fabricating them. But it?s these chips that make all of the new button-free interfaces possible, while still allowing up to 24 hours of mixed usage and 13 hours of talk time.
The new chips also make other ?contextual computing? possible without requiring the user to touch a button or screen. Turn the phone face up, and it displays the time and notifications. No buttons pressed, no power-draining backlight turned on: the LED display only lights up the pixels needed to show the time. Motorola calls this an ?active display.? If you hold the phone up and twist your wrist, this activates the phone?s camera, reducing the time between pocket and portrait to two seconds. The Moto X comes with a 10-megapixel camera and 50 gigabytes of Google Drive storage, free for two years.
Observers have been waiting for the phone for two years, since Google announced it was buying Motorola Mobility. Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside calls the Moto X ?the first phone designed from scratch? post-acquisition. On quarterly earnings calls, Google CEO Larry Page has promised revolutionary new devices that would solve the problems of durability and battery life that still plague smartphones (see ?What New Ideas Does Google Have Brewing at Motorola??) once Motorola?s existing product pipeline cleared (see ?Motorola Shows Off First Smartphones Under Google?). Since then, Motorola?s ?X Phone? has been rumored, teased, leaked, and marketed for months.
Color scheme: The Moto X will be offered in a variety of colors and materials.
As expected, the Moto X has a 4.7-inch Gorilla Glass screen that runs nearly edge-to-edge across the phone?s face, and a plump, rounded back that accommodates its custom-shaped battery and fits in the hand more like a mouse than the flat slate popular in today?s smartphones.
Motorola is touting the phone?s customizable colors and features, and the fact that it will be available on every major carrier in the U.S. and many more worldwide by late August or early September. The phone is also being assembled in Fort Worth, Texas, which makes it possible for U.S. customers to get a customized device in four days.
At Thursday?s event, Motorola?s senior vice president Rick Osterloh presented this phone as the culmination of Motorola?s 40 years of work on mobile communications. Citing smartphone makers? ?lack of innovation? and ?lack of imagination,? Osterloh said that the team assigned to develop the Moto X discovered that ?smart phones weren?t very smart??a direct echo of what Steve Jobs said before presenting the first iPhone.
In fact, relatively few features of the Moto X haven?t already been incorporated in Motorola?s Droid line of smartphones for Verizon, which deflates their impact. And because of the X?s long gestation, many of the wilder rumors about the phone turned out to be hot air. But it is still a milestone device and, if it?s successful, it could change the smartphone industry?s status quo.
Customization could be a big selling point of the Moto X in the United States. ?Cars let you customize the interior or exterior,? said Osterloh, ?but with phones, which are probably our most personal technology or object, you get to choose between black, white, and maybe silver.? The Moto X comes in 18 back and seven accent colors, as well as a white or black front.
Initially, however, this level of customization is only for customers in the U.S. on AT&T?s network. Most of the world gets to choose between textured white or textured black. Motorola says other carriers will be added to the Moto Maker customization program later in the year.
It?ll be possible to tailor a device at the AT&T store or online at motomaker.com. Most of the backs are either a smooth or textured polycarbonate, but Motorola is also experimenting with wooden backs. Although this won?t be available at launch, Motorola showed off finishes in bamboo, teak, ebony, and rosewood at the New York event.
Because the devices are assembled in the U.S., Motorola can configure and ship them in any customization within four days. If you?re unhappy with your custom phone, within 14 days you can ask for a return, and Motorola will ship you a new device with a prepaid FedEx box to return the old one.
?Every selection on the Moto Maker website checks the part?s availability in real-time,? said John Renaldi, the director of Moto Maker. ?Every one of our manufacturing lines can immediately switch to become a customized line,? depending on the distribution of orders.
Motorola?s goal, said Renaldi, was to export this on-the-fly customization ability to its factories all over the world. For now, Fort Worth?s proximity to Motorola?s design centers in Chicago and California make it Moto?s perfect pilot factory.
Forrester analyst Charles Golvin said that Motorola?s emphasis on customization speaks to the saturation of the current smartphone market, and was surprised that Motorola priced the Moto X at $199 on a two-year contract, given its goal of making ?a phone for everybody? and the difficulty of competing with the iPhone and other top smartphones at that price.
The most lasting impact of the Moto X will be beneath the surface. Local, just-in-time assembly may shift how and where many electronics are manufactured and make customization more common. Phone makers are also looking to larger possibilities for speech, proximity, and motion sensing, and beefing up their processor designs accordingly. Whether the Moto X is Motorola?s iPhone moment or not, it shows where mobile computing is headed.

Hiring slows in July but jobless rate falls to four-year low

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. employers slowed their pace of hiring in July but the jobless rate fell anyway, a pair of mixed signals that could make the U.S. Federal Reserve more cautious about drawing down its huge economic stimulus program.
The number of jobs outside the farming sector increased by 162,000 last month, the smallest gain in four months and below analysts' expectations, Labor Department data showed on Friday.
The lackluster reading reinforced the view that the job market is only inching toward recovery from the 2007-09 recession and weighed on financial markets.
"We're sort of grinding along here," said Gordon Charlop, managing director at Rosenblatt Securities in New York.
At the same time, gains in employment were enough to push the jobless rate down to 7.4 percent, its lowest level since December 2008.
However, the report was full of details that cast the declining jobless rate in a poor light, and raised doubts over whether the economy has improved enough for the Fed to begin reducing bond purchases at its next meeting in September.
For one, part of the drop in unemployment was due to a decline in the size of the U.S. workforce, which only includes people who have jobs or are looking for work. The workforce can shrink when more workers retire or go to school, but it also contracts when people give up the job hunt.
Also robbing some of the report's luster, Americans on average worked shorter work weeks in July, while hourly wages fell. That bodes poorly for future consumer spending, the engine of the U.S. economy. The construction industry shed 6,000 jobs.
The government also said 26,000 fewer jobs were created in May and June than previously estimated.
TAPER TALK
The darker side of the report gave direction to Wall Street.
Yields on U.S. government debt fell sharply, suggesting investors were less confident the Fed could soon begin easing its bond purchases, which are aimed at spurring employment. U.S. stocks were mostly flat.
"Look for some soul searching by those who thought and acted as if reducing (the Fed's) long-term asset purchases next month was a done deal," said Marc Chandler, a currency strategist at Brown Brothers Harriman in New York.
The U.S. central bank currently buys $85 billion a month in bonds to keep borrowing costs low, and the stimulus program has helped the country's beleaguered housing market and boosted car sales.
Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said last month the U.S. central bank would likely reduce its monthly purchases by the end of the year if the economy progressed as much as policymakers expect.
On Friday, St. Louis Fed President James Bullard said he believed the Fed should be careful about basing its decisions on forecasts and that policymakers should wait to see more data before deciding to taper bond purchases.
Other data on Friday showed a slight gathering of inflationary pressure, with the 12-month reading of the Commerce Department's gauge of core inflation rising to 1.2 percent in June from 1.1 percent a month earlier.
That could allay some concerns at the Fed that extremely low inflation could hurt the economy by giving consumers more reason to put off purchases.
Policymakers also might take comfort in a pace of hiring that at least appears to be steady. The jobless rate has fallen eight tenths of a point in the last year.
"While July itself was a bit disappointing, the Fed will be looking at the cumulative improvement," said Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics in Toronto. He reckoned the Fed was still on track to trim its stimulus efforts in September.
STRUCTURAL CONCERNS
Beyond the report's implications for policy, a deeper question is whether the pace of job creation can be sustained given weak economic growth.
Gross domestic product, a measure of the nation's economic output, grew at a mere 1.4 percent annual rate in the first half of the year, down from 2.5 percent in the same period of 2012.
Most economists expect GDP will accelerate in the second half of this year, which would make it more plausible for the current hiring trend to continue.
But the fact that the jobless rate has fallen steadily despite weak output might point to a frightening possibility: perhaps the U.S. economy's growth potential has fallen.
This would mean less output is needed to create jobs, but that incomes would grow at a slower pace over the long run. The prospect of such a structural shift worries economists and investors.
Friday's report could fan those concerns. The average work week declined to 34.4 hours in July, while average hourly earnings slipped 0.1 percent.
"The labor market remains stuck in quicksand," said Todd Schoenberger, managing partner at LandColt Capital in New York.
The report also showed 5.7 percent of Americans who had jobs in July could not get enough hours to qualify as full-time workers, the same percentage as in June.
While the unemployment rate has fallen steadily over the last year, the share of part-time workers who want more hours has barely dropped.
Also, the number of long-term unemployed, while falling, remains historically high. Bernanke has warned this situation could deal lasting damage to the economy's growth potential.
That is because people out of work for extended periods might never work again. In July, 4.25 million Americans had been unemployed for at least six months.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Kristen Wiig, Zach Galifianakis, Rachel Maddow and Daniel Radcliffe will be among the celebrities lending their voices to a new season of "The Simpsons" this fall on Fox.
Wiig will be heard in the animated show's season premiere on Sept. 29, voicing a high-strung FBI agent whom Lisa enlists for help when she suspects that something sinister has happened to Homer, Fox said Thursday at the Television Critics Association meeting.

?FaceHalt? Brings Galaxy S4 Smart Pause Functionality To Every iPhone Video App [VIDEO]

Whenever Samsung drops a new flagship device, the company always seeks to outdo itself and indeed its rivals with a plethora of new and exciting software features. When the Galaxy S4 hit the market earlier on this year there were more such implementations than ever before, and the eye sensing feature, Smart Pause, which pauses video clips when a user looks away, has proved a solid gold hit with consumers. With Apple seemingly unlikely to add this kind of functionality to iOS anytime soon, iPhone users probably won?t be able to enjoy the same video viewing experience of their S4-owning rivals, but thanks to a new tweak by the name of FaceHalt, they now can, on a system level.
The first thing to note about FaceHalt, which can be found over at the famed BigBoss repository, is that it?s not as smooth and seamless as the eye sensor of the Galaxy S4. Not all video playback apps are currently supported, with the release notes adding that clients boasting custom video implementations, such as the newly re-released VLC for iOS, are not yet compatible. With that said, the developer is working on a solution, so in the near future, we should begin to see wider support from the FaceHalt tweak.
Once installed, FaceHalt will stop a video from playing as soon as you stop facing your display. This means you won?t miss an important bit of a movie, and if you?re constantly being interrupted, you won?t have the added annoyance of having to bring about the playback controls to continually be hitting the play/pause button.
You can manually pause your video if you so wish by double-tapping the pause button, and to continue playing while also re-activating the FaceHalt feature, all you need to do is press play.
The tweak, which costs $1.99, is compatible with the iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 and fifth-gen iPod touch. If you find yourself constantly watching videos on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, it?s definitely worth checking out, and although it could really do with a little work, is certainly more than usable as is.
If you?re not jailbroken, then you can give LookAway Player for iPhone a shot. It does pretty much the same thing, but is limited to its very own video player.

Google Play edition HTC One Android 4.3 kernel source released
Kernel source published —? but no update for devices just yet
HTC has released the kernel source code and related platform support files for the Google Play edition HTC One, as required under the GPL. The code drop comes ahead of the Google Play HTC One's Android 4.3 update — officially, the phone's still on 4.2.2, and we've not seen any updates on our own devices just yet.
The kernel source code is from software version 3.06.1700.10 (up from 2.14.1700.15) and Linux kernel version 3.4.10 (unchanged from the 4.2 firmware.)
We've checked Samsung's open source release center and there's no Android 4.3 code on there just yet, so it looks like HTC's first out the gate with its kernel release. In any case, hopefully this means the 4.3 update for Google Play edition phones is just around the corner. We'll let you know as soon as the updates start rolling out.

Valerie Harper: Started Production on TV Movie After Brain Cancer Diagnosis
Valerie Harper has started production in Vancouver on a new TV movie called, "The Town that Came A Courtin." Harper, famously known to play Rhoda on the Mary Tyler Moore Show announced that she was battling terminal brain cancer in early March.
The UP cable channel announced that the movie was slated to premiere in January. The movie also stars Cameron Bancroft, Lauren Holly and Lucie Guest. In the movie, Harper plays the owner of a hotel who is trying to help a romance flourish between a widowed mayor and an author.
"When I learned that the remarkable Valerie Harper was interested in working, I was so excited, because that meant she was doing well," Barbara Fisher, programming chief at UP, said to ?AP. "We are thrilled to have this iconic talent in our film and awed by her determination to live each day to the fullest. She is truly an inspiration."
At the time that Harper announced she had brain cancer, doctors said she could have had as little as three months to live.
"The thing I have is -- is very rare and it's serious and it's incurable . . . so far," she said. "So I'm holding on to the 'so far, " she said on the Today Show.
Harper added she is remaining "hopeful" and has the intention to "live each . . . moment fully." She said, "I'm not dying until I do."
She went on a number of talk-show appearances to talk about her condition and also reunited with some Mary Tyler Moore co-stars including Mary Tyler Moore and Cloris Leachman for an episode of "Hot in Cleveland."
"UP, which is based in Atlanta, airs on Time Warner Cable (Ch. 152), DirecTV (Ch. 338) and DISH network (Ch. 188) - and bills itself as airing "uplifting family?entertainment," reported The New York Post.

Train of Thought Derailed: How an Accident Can Affect Your Brain
A survivor of last week's deadly train derailment in Spain illustrates how disaster can alter your mind

My cousin Guillermo Cassinello Toscano was on the train that derailed in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, last week when it went around a bend at twice the speed limit. Cassinello heard a loud vibration and then a powerful bump and then found himself surrounded by bloody bodies in wagon number nine. Shaking, he escaped the wreckage through either a door or a hole in the train?he cannot recall?then sat amid the smoke and debris next to the track and began to cry. Seventy-nine passengers died.
Cassinello doesn?t remember everything that happened to him. The same mechanisms that kept his brain sharp enough to escape immediate danger may also make it harder for him both to recall the accident, and to put the trauma behind him. "The normal thing is that the person doesn't remember the moment of the accident or right after," says clinical psychologist Javier Rodriguez Escobar of trauma therapy team Grupo Isis in Seville, who helped treat and study victims of the 2004 Madrid train bombings. That's because the mind and the body enter a more alert but also more stressed state, with trade-offs that can save your life, but harm your mind?s memory-making abilities.
As the train fell over, several changes would have swept through Cassinello?s body. His adrenal glands, near his kidneys, would have released adrenaline (also known as epinephrine) into his bloodstream. The adrenaline would have directed blood to the powerful muscles of his arms and legs, where it would help him escape the wreckage faster. The hormone would have raised his heart and breathing rates. It also would have stimulated his vagus nerve, which runs from his spine to his brain. Although adrenaline cannot cross the blood?brain barrier, the vagus can promote noradrenaline production in the brain. That hormone activates the amygdala, which helps form memories.
Just the right amount of noradrenaline, researchers have found, can boost memory storage; too much can destroy it. Figuring out the balance could allow researchers to harness the hormone. Neuroscientist Christa McIntyre at the University of Texas at Dallas and colleagues have been studying how the chemical shapes memory-making in rats (her team is planning a human trial). When the team stimulated rats? vagus nerves the animals? memories improved. McIntyre has to keep the dose low, however, because other experiments have shown that too much noradrenaline appears to impede memory-making[OR, TO VARY: formation]. Researchers are still trying to determine whether the excess noradrenaline directly causes the memory lapses or if the hormone is associated with high stress levels that cause some other chemical system to interfere. "That's the part we don't really understand: if there's too much [noradrenaline] or if there's another system that kicks in and puts a brake on it," McIntyre says.
Cassinello's memory lapses may be due to a noradrenaline overflow. But there may be other explanations for the gaps in his memory. His brain may have narrowed his attention at the time of the crash to only those things that matter for survival, such as escaping the train, leading him to ignore things that do not, such as whether the path out of the train passed through a door or a hole. Researchers have shown that humans report selective hearing during stressful events and that stressed people pay attention to different things than do unstressed people (pdf).
