Tuesday's Healthy Fuel Recipe: Homemade Sports Drinks

The art of drinking the right thing at the right time on the bike, run,?or climb?can take years of practice.? I?m gonna speed that up for you.? Really, it?s simple.? It simply depends on 3 factors:

  1. Your primary goal: Are you training mostly for health and weight loss OR for performance?? This can become less clear when you?re trying to do both, but by establishing a primary goal, you?ll set the foundation for a fueling strategy.
  2. The duration and intensity of your training.
  3. The weather conditions ? temperature and humidity.? A little subjective, I consider low temps under 50 degree F, moderate at 50-70 degree F, and high at 70+ degree F (especially with high humidity).? What can I say?? I?m a cool-weather-loving athlete.

This week, we?re going to explore some simple homebrew sports drinks and strategies for choosing the right one on different types of training.? Proper hydration and fueling can be all the difference between PR?ing, and bonking in the heat and dragging yourself back home.

Take a look at the Hydration Chart I?ve created below to see what ingredients you?ll want in your drink for your workout (applies to most all workouts, not just cycling).? Then, see the recipes that follow.?? You?ll be ready to ?rock? your next training, well-hydrated!

Water + Electrolytes (sodium) Drink:

1)???? 64 oz. water + low-calorie sweetened flavoring (such as True Lemon Lemonade, lemon or lime juice + Stevia, or Crystal Light PURE ? look for Stevia or sucralose-sweetened, to taste) + ?-? tsp. salt

Per 8 oz. serving: 0-5 calories, 0-1 gram carbs, 75-150 mg sodium; Per hour @ 20 oz.: 0-12 calories, 0-3 grams carb, 187-375 mg sodium

Similar Commercial Drinks (in terms of carbs and sodium): NUUN Tablets, Camelbak Elixir

Water + Diluted Carbs + Electrolytes (sodium):

1)???? 64 oz. water + ? cup sugar + flavoring (such as unsweetened lemon juice, unsweetened Kool-aid, etc.)+ ?-? tsp. salt

2)???? 56 oz. water + 8 oz. 100% juice + 2 Tbsp. sugar + ?-? tsp. salt

Per 8 oz. serving: 30 calories, 8 gram carbs, 75-150 mg sodium; Per hour @ 20 oz.: 75 calories, 20 grams carb, 187-375 mg sodium

Similar Commercial Drinks (in terms of carbs and sodium): G2, any powdered sports drink mixed to half-strength

Water + Carbs + Electrolytes (sodium):

1)???? 64 oz. water + ? cup sugar + flavoring (such as unsweetened lemon juice, Kool-aid, etc.)+ ?-? tsp. salt

2)???? 48 oz. water + 16 oz. 100% juice + ? cup sugar + ?-? tsp. salt

Per 8 oz. serving: 60 calories, 15 gram carbs, 75-150 mg sodium; Per hour @ 20 oz.: 150 calories, 38 grams carb, 187-375 mg sodium

Similar Commercial Products (in terms of carbs and sodium): Gatorade Pro, 1st Endurance, Skratchlabs Exercise Hydration

Easy Add-ons for experimentation:

Potassium: Potassium is another important electrolyte in training, and it can be easily added from Morton?s Lite, which can be found at your grocery store next to the salt.? If you do decide to add it, try ? tsp. per 64 oz. fluid (44 mg Potassium per 8 oz., or 109 mg per hour with 20 oz.).

Maltodextrin: Maltodextrin is a man-made carbohydrate that has advantages over simpler sugars because 1) it provides a slightly less simple carb, which can last longer and lead to more prolonged energy, 2) it does not add a ?sweet? taste, and 3) it can be absorbed in addition to fructose and glucose, rather than in place of (so you can absorb more carbs per hour).? It can be found online or in health stores?try adding 30-60 grams maltodextrin per 64 oz. fluid (in addition to other ingredients above)

L-Glutamine: L-Glutamine can reduce muscle breakdown and muscle soreness in training and recovery.? It can be found in health food, vitamin, and online stores.? Try adding 4500-6000 mg per 64 oz. fluid.

Comments:

For anyone who is thinking that they?d much rather just drink water, I hear you.? I understand that good, clean water is the most refreshing drink while training, and that drinking a sugary sports drink gets old (especially one loaded with chemicals you can?t pronounce).? And, for those athletes whose primary goal is health and weight loss, or who are riding at a low or moderate intensity on a short ride, this is fine.

However, for an athlete who?s primarily trying to improve performance, push him/herself to new limits, and train or race with time goals in mind, I recommend a drink with water, electrolytes and carbs.? Here?s why:

  • When you?re training or competing for >60 minutes, and especially in hot or humid weather, you lose more than just fluid in your sweat.? Your body depends on the electrolytes you lose for many functions, and it?s crucial to replenish them if you want to perform at an optimal level and stay healthy.? Over-hydration can be very dangerous, but usually only occurs when fluids are replenished without electrolytes.
  • Sports drinks that contain a 4-8% carbohydrate solution leave your stomach quickest, and are therefore digested and absorbed faster than water.? Within this range, you do have to be careful to not concentrate too much, as it can lead to stomach upset.
  • Sodium actually increases the absorption rate of fluids in your large intestine, so you hydrate better when the fluid contains sodium.? I recommend sodium mixed within a drink, rather than in a high-sodium pill for this reason and to avoid the feeling of ?heavy? or swollen legs and diminished energy.
  • When you replenish only fluid, but you?ve lost fluid and electrolytes, your body must work hard to reestablish the correct ratio of electrolytes to fluid in its plasma.? In order to do so, you may continue to excrete fluid in order to not cause a diluted plasma ratio of electrolytes to fluid.? End result: More dehydration.
  • Your brain operates on glucose.? Your muscles, once they?ve used up their short supply of glycogen, need a consistent source of glucose for optimal performance whether burning carbs or burning fat (in the absence of carbs, lactic acid builds up quicker).? When you give your body fluid, lytes, and carbs, you give it the nutrients it needs to work harder for a longer amount of time.? In this way, plain water without another steady source of carbohydrates falls short.
  • Dehydration and imbalanced electrolytes have a direct, detrimental impact on your performance.? Just a 3% loss of body weight due to dehydration can significantly impair your performance, muscle contractile strength, and speed.? At 5-6%, you?re bonking and can no longer regulate body temperature.

In fact, I think training with the proper fluids is every bit as important as competing with them.? When training, you must be able to push yourself if you want to get better, right?? So why not give yourself every advantage?? Money for sports drinks can certainly add up, especially when used 3-4 times per week.?? Enter these homebrews above.? They are inexpensive and utilize simple ingredients to provide fluids, carbs, and electrolytes.? And while I would never claim that my homebrew is better than or as researched as some of the good products you can find commercially, I find it does the job for a tiny fraction of the cost and without the chemical junk.? For many athletes, it affords them the opportunity to training every day with adequate, consistent fuel.

When considering your during-training fuel and hydration plan, keep in mind that your body can likely use ~60+ grams carbs (depending on the sources of carbs), 200-300 calories, 400-700 mg sodium, 100-130 mg potassium, 16-32 ounces fluid per hour of training.? If you?d like to consume these amounts,? you?ll generally need 20 oz. of the water + carbs + lytes drink PLUS ~25 grams carbs from another source.

You can make every workout count whether you want to lose weight, become a better cyclist, or both.? If you want to get better, you must train better.? Don?t waste opportunities.? Give your body the fuel it needs every time.? And then, enjoy a nice glass of ice-cold water when you?re done.

ShowBed.com ? Blog Archive ? Company Franchising ? Just What ...

What is a Franchise?

? An authorization to sell a company?s goods or services in a particular location
? A company established or operated beneath an authorization to sell or distribute a company?s goods or services in a distinct place.

How did franchising start off?

One of the earliest franchisors was the Singer Sewing Machine? Company, which set up dealers shortly immediately after the Civil War to sell and repair its revolutionary machines all through the country. Shortly after the turn of the century, Coca-Cola? licensed other individuals to manufacture and distribute its amazing elixir. Ford Motor Company? later set up dealers to sell and service its items. Of course, McDonald?s? is an instance of how an entrepreneur (Ray Kroc) could take an notion and rapidly spread it coast to coast (and at some point about the globe) without having starting out with millions of dollars in capital. Many businesses turn to franchising as a program for expansion because they recognize that they can grow quickly having a minimum quantity of capital and enlist top-notch partners in the event the company is willing to share the income. The business that sells licenses to its method is named the franchisor, whilst these who open their very own units are named franchisees.

Why franchise?

There are lots of causes why franchising will be the best sort of operation for the majority of first-time business owners. Most revolve around the elevated probability that the business will succeed and supply profits towards the owner within a shorter time frame than an independent company. This permits the owner to address her or his individual ambitions each financially and personally. Here are several, more comprehensive, answers to that query.

Earn what you?re worth

Thousands of franchise owners report they were handicapped in their corporate careers by business policies and supervisors that place a cap on their earnings. When you personal your own organization, your efforts are rewarded and your private income shows it!

Satisfaction of Achievement

Several business owners report that seeing their actions turned into reality without stagnating for months in committee meetings (as frequently happens in huge firms) can be a key reward of owning their organization.

Quicker Start-Up than Independents

A verified program out-paces an independent?s hit & misses operation almost every time. Looking at just independents that succeed?you?ll find that franchises grow faster, reach break-even sooner and succeed much more regularly than other individuals in the same industry as depicted in the accompanying chart

What do I need to know?

Another query that arises is ?What do I need to know in building my personal franchise?? You can find four main ingredients found in each business?

? The product or service that is delivered to its customers.
? The location that the enterprise occupies.
? The quantity of capital that was invested or borrowed by the venture.
? The management team that runs the company -You!

Making a choice

Choosing the right franchise can be a confusing process.

1st, you must believe in the product or service that the franchise network delivers. Could be the niche stable, expanding, long-term, saturated?

Next, you must verify the industry?s future. What do the trade papers predict?

Check your aptitude for the job. If you don?t enjoy math, an accounting franchise isn?t for you, etc. Often outside sources can help right here. A personality and aptitude test (similar to these used by major corporations) will help you discover your hidden talents.

Determine the earnings capability. Most franchisors can?t provide earnings projections, but you must make an effort to determine your future return.

Confirm the potential earnings and the franchisor?s integrity with existing franchisees. Each franchisor will give you a list of its network members.

You really should call them to get their confirmation of your projections. If a franchisor (or organization opportunity seller) will not give you a list of its franchisees, you ought to heed the red flashing lights and end discussions.

Whilst this report is just the tip of the iceberg, you can get a good concept why you must begin your own personal franchise, today.

What is Bankruptcy Bypass? Do I qualify? ? Legal Aid Society of ...

Back

Since 2009, Legal Aid has helped seniors and persons with disabilities deal with harassing creditors through the Bankruptcy By-Pass Program. Volunteer attorneys, through the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, assess clients? ability to pay creditors. This program advises creditors that the harassing calls and letters must stop once the volunteers determine the client is ?judgment proof.?

To be ?judgment proof? means that the law will not allow the person?s income to be garnished or attached. There are many types of income that cannot be attached, or taken out of a bank account by a creditor that has gone to court and gotten a judgment against that person. Some common sources of protected income include social security, SSI, and veterans? benefits. People helped by this program do not own any homes and are not likely to work again. They also own personal property, like furniture, clothing and cars that cannot be taken by creditors because of the value of the items.

People who seek help through this program often believe that the only option to stop the creditors? harassing phone calls is to file bankruptcy. However, bankruptcy is not always the best choice. People can only file a personal bankruptcy once every eight years. Clients in this program are not at risk of having their money or assets taken by creditors. Because of this, volunteer attorneys will advise clients about the benefits of not using their right to file bankruptcy.

Since the program began, volunteers have helped over 100 people. Many clients comment that it feels as if a weight is lifted once the harassment stops. Creditors often give people wrong information about what funds a creditor can collect. Many people fear they will be charged criminally for not paying bills. As a result, they still try to make payments to credit card companies but cannot pay more than the interest fees. The By-Pass program will help clients sort out what expenses need to be paid each month including rent, utilities and medical costs.

If you think this program can help you, please call Legal Aid?s intake line at 216-687-1900 or 1-888-817-3777. You will be asked a number of questions to find out if the By-Pass program can help you. If it cannot, Legal Aid may still be able to assist you.

This FAQ was written by Lauren Gilbride, Esq. and appeared as a story in Volume 28, Issue?2 of ?The Alert? ? a newsletter for seniors published by Legal Aid. Click here to read the full issue.

Pssst ... want to buy some chewing gum?

LONDON (Reuters) - A crackdown by 'logo police' on brands being linked to the Olympics without official sponsorship rights is proving a challenge rather than hindrance for some companies who are relishing testing the limits.

London Games organisers have enforced strict rules to protect official trademarks and stop ambush marketing but have been accused of "lunacy" for ordering shops to remove sausages, flowers and bagels shaped as the Olympic rings.

Within the Olympic Park, sushi boxes come without soy sauce or wasabi as the vendors are unable to find sachets that do not feature brand logos.

Some food stalls are selling chocolate, chewing gum and savoury snacks from under the counter as they cannot display items not produced by key sponsors.

Outside the park, companies are coming up with novel ways to piggyback on the Games without running foul of a 2006 British law that tightened protection for Olympic sponsors and has the clout of fines of 20,000 pounds.

A glasses company has teased organisers over poor eyesight after a flag blunder, an off-licence offered discounts to people with items from non-Olympic sponsors and a betting agency threatened legal action after being told to remove ads.

Rupert Pratt, managing director at sponsorship agency Generate, said the stunts could set a precedent for what brands can and cannot do to get around the Olympic rules.

"The Olympic movement does a fantastic job of scaremongering to protect its sponsors but the reality is that if you look at the ambushing rules there is a lot that can be done," Pratt told Reuters after a day watching diving at the Olympic Park.

"So far LOCOG (the London Olympic organiser) is doing the smart thing by not getting dragged into a public battle with companies taunting it but this is testing the legislation."

EGG AND SPOON

A group of 11 international companies sponsor the event, paying nearly $1 billion for the chance to have their brand associated with the Games and the Olympic rings over four years.

A further 700 million pounds has been paid by 42 domestic sponsors.

LOCOG argues a failure to protect the interests of sponsors would result in British taxpayers having to pick up the tab for staging the Games, beyond the 9.3 billion pounds already forked out for its infrastructure.

Under rules to protect sponsors, the logos of competitors are banned from Games venues, advertising is outlawed in 'event zones' around the arenas and non-Olympic businesses cannot use images like the Olympic rings or terms like 'London 2012'.

But the rigorous enforcing of the laws by the so-called 'Olympics brand police', a team of 250 lawyers and enforcement officers, has upset civil rights campaigners.

"As global attention turns to Britain, surely we should be showcasing the best of our democratic traditions - not adopting practices totally out of keeping with freedom and fairness," said Sophie Farthing of the human rights group Liberty.

The testing of boundaries by certain companies has ensured the issue remains in the public debate.

Glasses company Specsavers used a diplomatic blunder by Olympic staff mixing up the North and South Korean flags at a football game to design an ad written partly in Korean with the two flags and a strapline: "Should have gone to Specsavers".

Oddbins, an off-licence chain, launched a marketing campaign challenging the branding restrictions and urging other businesses to follow suit to highlight the "ridiculous rules".

The off-licence has offered 30 percent discount to customers with a list of items of non-Olympics sponsors such as Nike trainers, Vauxhall car keys, an RBS MasterCard, an iPhone, a bill from British Gas and a receipt for a Pepsi bought at KFC.

Bookmaker Paddy Power was told to remove posters advertising its official sponsorship of the "largest athletics event in London this year", referring to an egg and spoon race in London in Savigny-sur-Seille, France.

Paddy Power spokesman Ken Robinson said the bookmaker had worked hard to ensure the ad did not violate any Olympic rules and it threatened to seek a court order against LOCOG.

LOCOG backed down and the posters are still up.

"We like to be a bit anti-establishment and push the envelope but we had done our homework," said Robinson.

"I think people are terrified to do something that potentially could violate the Olympic legislation."

(AP) ? In the capital of one of the world's most dangerous countries, a hooded, masked man jumped out of a car on an assault mission.

His target: a crumbling wall on a garbage-strewn corner. With his accomplice acting as lookout, the man plastered a giant black-and-white reproduction of Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" ? wielding a pink pistol. In minutes he was gone.

The city's self-proclaimed Urban Maeztro had struck again with another artistic "intervention" designed to make Hondurans think about the violence that has traumatized Tegucigalpa.

"The level of how common guns have become in this country has passed what is rationally admissible," said the 26-year-old graphic artist, who left his day job at an advertising agency to become the masked crusader. "It doesn't seem to surprise anyone, but for me it continues to be madness."

The artist uses the street name Urban Maeztro, a stylized translation of "Urban Master," to shield his true identity because the work is both dangerous and illegal.

The Honduran lacks the fame of the elusive British graffiti artist known only as Banksy, who has gained notoriety in Europe in recent years. Urban Maeztro said only his closest friends know that he launches the artistic assaults, dressed in a hoodie, his face covered with a kerchief depicting a skull.

The artist arrests passing viewers by defacing posters of artistic masterpieces, such as the Mona Lisa, with guns, grenades and other iconic tools of violence. He also employs more traditional graffiti, painting sections of metal light poles to look like bullets.

"There is a parallel between the brutal violation of a work so beautiful by adding a firearm and the violence and guns in Tegucigalpa, which could also be a beautiful city without them," he said.

His canvas is the streets of the Central American city of 1.2 million, which he describes as "captive, fearful and closed by a mixture of violence, poverty and an absence of public services." About 1,149 people were murdered in the Honduran capital last year, more than 87 for every 100,000. That's 10 times the rate considered an epidemic of violence by the World Health Organization ? a number that has doubled in the last five years.

As a result, Tegucigalpa's streets are typically empty, as are public squares and other traditional meeting spots. Most people congregate in giant, indoor American-style shopping malls guarded by men with automatic rifles.

During a recent graffiti assault, even passing motorists swerved at the sight of the hooded artist in a Honduras tourist T-shirt and paint-speckled cargo pants drawing on the city's walls.

A security guard watched as he plastered Grant Wood's "American Gothic" on a wall In front of the National University, completely absorbed.

"Who pays you to do that?" the guard asked.

"No one," the artist answered.

"Then why do it?"

"To help you think."

It worked, as the guard stood contemplating whether the old farm couple was holding M-16 rifles instead of pitch forks.

During a recent interview, the commando artist smiled easily and never raised his voice as he described his mission with Zen-like tranquility. He said he started the guerrilla attacks in October when he got tired of working a high-pressure agency job creating art for advertisements.

"In a country that's sinking, using art to boost consumption rather than to provoke social change became unbearable for me," he said.

Now working fewer hours at a cultural center, he has more time and greater flexibility for his project.

Standing over a gas stove in the outdoor garden of a friend's home in Tegucigalpa's historic center, the artist stirred a boiling pot of the glue he uses to affix his posters. Laundry dried in the sun on a nearby clothesline.

The artist said the catalyst for his mission as an anonymous urban artist came when he entered a UNESCO poster contest on cultural diversity. When he lost the contest, he decided that the institutional doors for supporting his idea were closed.

"The natural place for art is the street, forget the middleman," he said.

Since then he's created a dynamic that includes making his own glue by boiling wheat and water, which he said is "the best adhesive and cheap," and roaming the city on Sunday afternoons seeking vacant walls and inspiration. His accomplice, the documentarian Junior Alvarez, keeps watch while he works, then photographs the final piece.

"At first I had anxiety when I went into the streets," the artist said, "but now I'm used to the adrenaline."

Art critic Bayardo Blandino, curator of the Women in the Arts museum, said that Urban Maeztro's style of graffiti is new to Honduras, and that he is pushing the limits on the country's freedom of expression.

"If he continues with perseverance, he will get a loyal following and have an effect," said Blandino, who does not know Urban Maeztro's true identity.

During a social gathering on a recent Saturday night, traditional graffiti artists criticized his work for mixing formats and material and not sticking to pure graffiti art. Unknown to them, the man who paints as Urban Maeztro was among them.

He doesn't want his interventions to seem naive. He knows art won't diminish the number of weapons or improve education in his country.

But it's possible, he said, to "provoke reflection about these problems, the first step for citizens to develop a critical awareness. Everything in street art is context."

In an area of the city that houses some of Tegucigalpa's most elegant hotels, the Urban Maeztro plastered an image of Rene Magritte's "Son of Man," substituting a grenade for the apple covering the face of the suited subject in a bowler hat.

Three students smoking marijuana under the trees didn't hesitate to comment.

"Those responsible for the violence in Honduras are hidden, we don't know their faces, but they're powerful, they wear suits and ties," said one of the students, Gerson Ortiz.

If death is part of everyday life in Honduras, then Urban Maeztro says his work should be about "breaking the daily macabre by changing its meaning."

Doing his work is not easy in a country that experienced a coup three years ago and is now plagued by daily murders, many of them blamed on the police.

The violence has directly touched the artist, who remembers one night when he heard a car slowing down behind him as he was working.

"I looked back just in time to see someone lower the window and stick out a gun," he said. "He shot at me three times without a word. He didn't get me. I was really lucky."
