Fatigue, injuries finally slow Italy in Euro final

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) -Fatigue finally caught up with Italy. Forced by injuries to end the match with 10 men, the Azzurri had no answer for Spain's passing wizardry in the European Championship final.

Even "Super" Mario Balotelli couldn't break free to rescue the Azzurri this time, and the result, a 4-0 loss, was the most lopsided final in tournament history, eclipsing West Germany's 3-0 win over the Soviet Union in 1972.

Still, for a squad that entered this tournament without any big expectations and was hobbled by a match-fixing scandal, Italy can hardly be disappointed with a runner-up finish.

But coach Cesare Prandelli couldn't have been pleased with the way his squad sat back with eight men behind the ball in the opening quarter hour, which led to David Silva's opening goal in the 14th minute.

Seven minutes later, Italy's dependable right back Giorgio Chiellini limped off with an apparent left hamstring injury, the same problem that kept him out of the quarterfinal victory over England.

Midfielder Daniele De Rossi, who had to exit the England match with a sciatic nerve problem, also appeared far from 100 percent, and Spain defender Jordi Alba made it 2-0 in the 41st, racing past Leonardo Bonucci and shooting around helpless Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

De Rossi and defender Andrea Barzagli were so exhausted before the match that they didn't even take part in Saturday's final training session. Also, for the second consecutive game Prandelli presented his match strategy to the squad on video, simply because the team did not have enough energy to do it on the pitch.

Prandelli has preached an attack-at-all-costs mentality much like Spain, but after requiring 120 minutes and a shootout to beat England in the quarterfinals, then another physical victory over Germany in the semifinals, the strategy appeared to take its toll.

While Antonio Cassano threatened occasionally in the first half, he was then replaced by Antonio Di Natale to start the second half. Having had minor heart surgery in November, Cassano was out for more than five months. He returned in April and still does not have more than an hour in his legs.

Di Natale provided a brief spark at the start of the second half, but when midfielder Thiago Motta fell to the pitch untouched grasping his right hamstring on the hour mark, it spelled the end for Italy's comeback chances.

Motta, who had some physical problems in training last week, had to be carried off on a stretcher, and Italy had already used all three of its substitutions, leaving the Azzurri with 10 men.

Balotelli's best chance came midway through the first half, but Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas pushed Federico Balzaretti's cross away just as the 21-year-old striker was lining up a header from close range.

A goal would have given Balotelli sole possession of the tournament scoring lead. Still, his three goals left him level with four other players, and give Italy hope for the future.

Twitter Cuts Off LinkedIn ? Who?s Next?

Throughout Twitter?s infancy, the company had a loose philosophy toward its APIs. In the quest for a user base, developers were welcome to do much anything they wanted in integrating with Twitter, which often mean creating spin-offs that muddied Twitter?s original intended experience.

Six years later, Twitter has grown up. And as the 140-million-plus user service continues to expand to reach main stream audiences, Twitter knows it needs to assert and define itself more than ever.

Which is why when it was announced on Friday that Twitter had ended its tweet syndication partnership with LinkedIn, it signaled Twitter?s continued shift towards controlling the way users experience their tweets. Previously, LinkedIn had a deal with Twitter which allowed for syndication of users tweets inside of LinkedIn?s flowing user activity stream. As a result of that syndication, much of the recently added tweet features ? expandable tweets, threaded conversations, and the like ? weren?t showing up on users? LinkedIn pages.

?Ultimately, we want to make sure that the Twitter experience is straightforward and easy to understand,? wrote Twitter consumer product lead Michael Sippey in a company blog post, ?whether you?re on Twitter.com or elsewhere on the web.?

Losing Twitter could hurt LinkedIn?s user engagement, as much of the content flowing through users? feeds were integrated tweets. LinkedIn assures me, however, that its social news service LinkedIn Today ? which was originally powered in part by Twitter ? won?t be affected.

?Tweets have not been powering LinkedIn Today for some time,? a LinkedIn spokeswoman told me.

While ending the LinkedIn deal was big, I?ve heard from several sources that we should expect more of the same in the not-too-distant future. Just give a close read to Product Manager Sippey?s blog post, which went up just minutes before LinkedIn?s post. Sippy?s missive contains some especially strong wording, a harbinger of what?s to come for other developers:

??we?ve already begun to more thoroughly enforce our Developer Rules of the Road with partners, for example with branding, and in the coming weeks, we will be introducing stricter guidelines around how the Twitter API is used,? Sippey wrote.

As Twitter matures, tightening the reigns makes sense. LinkedIn?s deal, and other syndication deals like it, essentially work against the entire aim of what Twitter has been trying to accomplish over the past eight or so months. Recall the launch of the ?new, new? Twitter, a major visual and conceptual overhaul of the service which aimed to make it more accessible to the uninitiated. It cut through the jargon that has sprung up naturally in the Twitter ecosystem, instead relabeling different sections as ?Connect, Discover and Home.? Viewing decontextualized tweets from inside a partner site, then, loses much of the value Twitter has tried to add.

Not to mention the potential consequences on mobile monetization, an area where Twitter seems to have excelled where many others have failed. If Twitter experiences on third-party mobile clients lack the same monetization potential as that of Twitter.com and its native apps, it could be a huge pain point for the company?s business.

So who?s next?

Flipboard, for one, comes to mind. After a user authenticates their social profiles with Flipboard, the app pulls content from disparate sources across the web ? Facebook, RSS, Google+, and yes, Twitter ? in the form of URLs, and re-paginates the information in Flipboard?s own custom layout. While the result is a rather attractive social magazine, it displays third party content in a very distinctive, very Flipboard way. And it looks nothing like tweets which show up on Twitter.com.

Last month, Kara Swisher reported that Flipboard CEO Mike McCue, who also holds a seat on Twitter?s board, was likely to give up that seat due to Flipboard and Twitter possibly being set on a future ?collision course.?

?How users consume and use Twitter is a key part of its future, and that is what Flipboard does well already,? one person with knowledge of the situation told Swisher. ?There is going to be an inevitable crossroads for the two companies,? this person said.

Speculation at the time ? including my own ? involved Twitter?s potential acquisition of Flipboard in order to bolster the microblogging platform?s discovery capabilities. But considering Twitter?s recent actions towards LinkedIn, this may not be the case.

For what it?s worth, Flipboard tells me this hasn?t been a discussion the two companies have had thus far. As a third-party developer, Flipboard tells me its relationship with Twitter is strong, and it expects the two will continue working together.

Flipboard isn?t the only one that could be affected. As Sippey?s post notes, it seems that copycat clients ? or third party apps that really don?t add much value outside of what Twitter.com offers ? may be on the chopping block: ?Back in March of 2011,? Sippey writes, ?my colleague Ryan Sarver said that developers should not ?build client apps that mimic or reproduce the mainstream Twitter consumer client experience.??

Take Tweetdeck, the service Twitter purchased a little more than a year ago for $50 million, which basically offers a power-user version of Twitter. Historically, its interface has been drastically different than that of Twitter.com, though in recent months, Twitter has shown a willingness to change that: The company redesigned the app last year, removing a number of features and streamlining others. Twitter didn?t kill or handicap the service immediately, most likely because the company didn?t want to upset TweetDeck?s vibrant community of very vocal users. But it could very well get another throttling or makeover in the coming weeks.

Other clients that aren?t as popular ? Tweetbot, HootSuite and Seesmic ? may not be as safe. HootSuite may even already be preparing for a change; The company just launched a series of new app integrations on Thursday.

I doubt, however, that other services which rely on Twitter firehose access for more analytics and enterprise oriented needs ? like Topsy, Gnip, DataSift and Klout ? don?t have much to worry about. They?re working with vast amounts of data, completely independent of the user experience. Indeed, Topsy and Gnip told AllThingsD that there was no indication either company?s relationships with Twitter would change at all.

But Twitter-mimicking developers take heed: There is a sea change coming. And Twitter, not you, will soon be in fuller control of its user experience.

GAAR: India May Not Go For Retro-Taxing Of Overseas M&A

A committee which was formed to give recommendations on the implementation of the controversial general anti-avoidance rules (GAAR) provisions in India released its draft guidelines Thursday night. The draft guidelines have clarified that the GAAR will not be applied retrospectively.

GAAR, which was introduced in the budget in March, has been much criticized by the industry and investors for its anti-investment friendly provisions. The new tax rules, intended to eliminate tax evasion by companies by routing their investments through tax havens, lacked clarity in several aspects and investors feared its misuse.

The provisions in GAAR like retro-taxing created panic among investors that reflected in Indian capital and Forex markets through the high foreign fund outflow. Though the government deferred its implementation by a year to 2013, it virtually spoiled the investor sentiment towards the economy.

In the draft guidelines issued Thursday, the government sought to allay the investors' concerns over retro-taxing and other issues.

On Invoking the GAAR and Retro Taxing provisions: The ministry's draft guidelines clarify that there won't be any retro-taxing and GAAR provisions will be invoked only if a Foreign Institutional Investor (FII) opts to take advantage of tax treaties.

"Where an FII (foreign institutional investor) chooses to take a treaty benefit, GAAR provisions may be invoked in the case of the FII, but would not in any case be invoked in the case of the non-resident investors of the FII," says the draft guidelines.

The ministry has also suggested having an income threshold for invoking GAAR while making clear that "the provisions of GAAR will apply to the income accruing or arising to the?taxpayers on or after 01.04.2013."

Interplay between SAAR and GAAR: Allaying concerns that there can be interplay between the Anti-Avoidance Rules (SAAR) and Specific General Anti-Avoidance Rules (GAAR), the draft guidelines said: ?"While SAARs are promulgated to counter a specific abusive behavior, GAARs are used to support SAARs and to cover transactions that are not covered by SAARs. Under normal circumstances, where specific SAAR is applicable, GAAR will not be invoked. However, in an exceptional case of abusive behavior on the part of a taxpayer that might defeat a SAAR, as illustrated in Example No. 16 in Annexure E (or similar cases), GAAR could also be invoked." ?

On the Application of Section 96(2): One of the contentious provisions in GAAR was that even if only a part of the business arrangement is to obtain a tax benefit, the tax authorities will treat the whole arrangement as an impermissible arrangement, according to section 96(2).

However, now the draft guidelines recommend that "where only a part of the arrangement is impermissible, the tax consequences of 'Impermissible Avoidance Arrangement' will be limited to only that part of the arrangement."

The draft guidelines are not yet seen by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who assumed the charge of the Finance Ministry after Pranab Mukherjee resigned from the post. Finance ministry sources have revealed that the guideline will be finalized in consultation with the Prime Minister. However, with Singh making it clear that he would make all efforts to get back the foreign funds and revive economic growth, the concerns over the provisions of GAAR are expected to be addressed soon.?

Analysts expressed satisfaction over the government move to clarify on GAAR.

"Some clarifications are a welcome step. It remains to be seen how the guidelines are implemented," said N. C. Hegde, a Mumbai-based partner at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India, according to a Bloomberg report.

The government's initiative to sort out the concerns over GAAR is crucial in regaining the FII confidence. Experts feel though there still exists some doubts on the provisions of the controversial act, steps taken now are in right direction towards clearing them.?
