Grand Canyon University picks Mesa site for campus

PHOENIX (AP) -- Grand Canyon University has selected a Mesa site for its planned new campus in the southeastern part of the Phoenix metro area.

The site chosen by Grand Canyon is part of Eastmark, a mixed-use development of Arizona-based DMB Associates Inc.

The Christian private university located in west Phoenix had asked cities of Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Queen Creek and Tempe to submit proposals for a 75- to 100-acre site.

Grand Canyon says construction of the new facility will start in 2014 with tentative plans to open in late 2015 and full build-out over seven years.

According to Grand Canyon, plans call for offices and administration space, classrooms, labs, library, student union, student dorms, recreational fields and parking.

Mothballed NASA telescope may get new life as asteroid hunter

(Reuters) - NASA is considering re-activating a mothballed space telescope to help find asteroids that could be on a collision course with Earth, according to a senior U.S. space agency official.

Launched in December 2009, the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE, telescope spent about a year taking pictures for an all-sky map. With its infrared detectors, WISE was able to peer through thick layers of dust and see even relatively dim objects such as cool brown dwarf stars in great detail.

NASA then put WISE to work on another mission looking for asteroids and comets in the solar system. Of particular interest were objects in orbits that pass relatively close to Earth.

WISE found about 150 near-Earth asteroids, including 20 that were potentially hazardous, before funding for the project ran out. The telescope was put into hibernation in February 2011.

NASA is now reviewing options for enhancing its asteroid-hunting efforts including bringing WISE out of hibernation, Lindley Johnson, who oversees the agency's Near-Earth Objects observations program, said this week.

This follows February's explosion of a small asteroid in the skies above Russia and the near-Earth passage of a larger one the same day.

More than 1,500 people were hurt by flying glass and debris after that small asteroid exploded above Chelyabinsk, Russia. The larger asteroid then zipped past Earth closer than the networks of communication satellites that ring the planet.

Together, those events served as a celestial alarm clock, prompting congressional hearings and fresh calls for NASA and other agencies to step up asteroid detection initiatives.

NASA says it already has found about 95 percent of the asteroids that are .62 miles or larger in diameter.

"If an object of that size were to impact the Earth, it would have global consequences," Lindley said during a NASA advisory committee meeting in Washington. "One as much as 100 meters (328 feet) in size would have regional effects and could cause a great many casualties."

The Obama administration has requested funding from Congress to double NASA's $20 million Near-Earth Objects detection programs for the 2014 fiscal year beginning October 1.

Costs for WISE's potential re-activation and operation were not released, but Johnson said it may be possible within the program's current $20 million annual budget and would easily fit within the proposed $40 million spending plan.

NASA's human exploration program also has been developing an initiative to send a robotic spacecraft to a small nearby asteroid and redirect it into a high orbit around the moon, officials said.

Astronauts would then visit the asteroid as part of an initial foray to send humans beyond the International Space Station, which flies about 250 miles above Earth.

Another $85 million in Obama's $17.7 billion 2014 spending plan for NASA would start technology developments and planning for the robotic portion of the asteroid encounter.

NASA is about halfway through a 15-year effort to find 90 percent of all near-Earth objects that are as small as about 459 feet in diameter.

Scientists say one of the quickest ways to speed up the effort is to re-activate WISE. "We think it can be operated for three years and get much more data," Johnson said.

Time is of the essence as WISE is expected to slip from its optimal viewing orbit around Earth by early 2017.

UTEP basketball: NCAA says Isaac Hamilton's case to void letter of intent could take 6-8 weeks

August has tiptoed in, registration is roughly four weeks away, portions of the basketball schedule are out ... and UTEP still waits on its star recruit.

Isaac Hamilton, a McDonald's All-American and a national top 20 recruit, has requested permission to get out of his National Letter of Intent, citing an ill grandmother. UTEP has refused the request and now the matter must go to Indianapolis.

The National Letter of Intent Office, located in Indianapolis, will decide on the appeal. And it can be a lengthy process.

"Obviously, the first step is for the student-athlete to ask for his release from the university," said Susan Peal, director of the Letter of Intent Office. "If there is no release granted, then they would appeal to the National Letter of Intent Committee. They must submit documentation as to why they are asking for their release. The committee will hear from both sides and rule.

"Should there be no release granted, the athlete can appeal," Peal said. "At that time, we would arrange a conference call with the committee. As you can see, it can be a drawn out process. We usually tell both parties to allow six to eight weeks. We would try to speed that up. In a case this late, we would try to expedite it but we have to get the committee together and there is only so much we can do."

Peal said she

is not at liberty to say whether or not the office has received a request from Hamilton. But Hamilton's father, Greg, said they would go through the appeal process because "Isaac wants to play where his grandmother can see him play."

Meanwhile, parts of the schedule are being released.

UTEP officials announced this week the Miners will play Tennessee on Thanksgiving evening in the Battle 4 Atlantis, an eight-team tournament Nov. 28-30 at the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. All games will be televised on the NBC Sports Network.

USC will play Villanova at 11 a.m. MST, Kansas will play Wake Forest at 1:30 p.m. MST, Iowa will face Xavier at 5 p.m. MST and the Miners will meet Tennessee at 7:30 p.m. MST.

"The Battle 4 Atlantis features one of the top two or three fields in the country year in and year out," UTEP coach Tim Floyd said.

The tournament has had 191 teams make NCAA Tournament appearances, 25 Final Four appearances and five national champions.

The Miners should have a strong team -- with or without Hamilton but obviously stronger with him. UTEP has five of its top seven scorers returning, plenty of size and still four strong recruits.

"We have two freshmen who could play for anybody in the country," Floyd said. "Vince Hunter and Matt Willms. Our other two -- Josh Brown (5-foot-10 guard) and Jake Flaggert (6-6 forward) have an incredible opportunity."

And UTEP athletic director Bob Stull said, "Everybody is gloom and doom and that's just not the case. We've got five of our top seven players back and we have four guys over 6-9."

UTEP will have senior John Bohannon, 6-10, junior Cedrick Lang, 6-9, sophomore Hooper Vint, 6-11, and redshirt freshman Matt Willms, 7-1.

And there is still an element of hope that the Miners can have the outstanding 6-5 Hamilton.

But, for now, everyone simply must wait.

Plumes of ice crystals erupting from Saturn's moon Enceladus wax and wane in a pattern that could help reveal the inner workings of a body widely seen as a potential habitat for life beyond Earth, according to a new study.

The moon is thought to have either a global ocean under its icy crust or a sea underlying the crust in the south polar region. Theories suggest that frictional heat generated in Enceladus's interior keeps the sea from freezing. The friction is generated as Saturn's gravity tightens and relaxes its grip on the moon during each orbit.

Previous research revealed the south polar region as a hot spot whose surface is radiating up to 16 billion watts of power ? roughly equal to the heat generated by 16 large nuclear power plants.

Now, it appears that tidal action is changing the amount of ice the region ejects as well ? repeatedly opening and nearly closing four parallel, 80-mile-long "tiger stripe" fissures associated with the geysers feeding the plumes.

Stresses in Enceladus's crust overpower Saturn's gravity and widen the fissures when the moon reaches the most distant point in its orbit. At closest approach, Saturn's gravity overcomes the stresses and nearly shuts the fissures.

The results a reported by a team led by Cornell University planetary scientist Matthew Hedman are and set to appear in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature.

The plumes have captivated planetary scientists ever since the features were discovered in 2005. It marked the first time researchers could study a geologically active icy moon as events were happening. The material in the plumes provided a window on the chemical processes going on below the surface. The ices contain organic compounds and hydrocarbons that have piqued the interest of astrobiologists hunting for other potential habitats for life in the solar system.

Now, researchers say, they have a direct measure of the stresses at work on the crust.

In 2007, researchers published the results of modeling experiments suggesting that the moon underwent this process. That triggered a hunt to detect the effect, Dr. Hedman explains. Two other groups tried, but failed, to detect a consistent venting pattern in the different approaches they tried.

His team wasn't even looking for this effect when it started to review data gathered by Cassini's Visual Infrared Mapping Spectrometer, Hedman says. Instead, the researchers were trying to analyze the range of particle sizes in the plumes, which are known to feed one of Saturn's rings, known as the E ring.

But in poring over the data, Catherine Gosmeyer, an undergraduate student at Indiana University serving as a research assistant at the time, noted pronounced changes in the brightness of the plumes with time. Looking at the pattern, and particularly at the intensity of the changes, "I thought, 'That can't possibly be right,' " Hedman recalls.
