Groundbreaking air-cleaner saves polluting industrials

Dec. 28, 2012 ? Industries across Europe are threatened with shutdown as European Union emission rules for Volatile Organic Compounds are tightened. Now an air cleaning invention from the University of Copenhagen has proven its ability to remove these compounds. And in the process they have helped a business in Danish town Aarhus improve relations to angry neighbors.

Inventor, Copenhagen chemist Matthew Johnson, presented evidence for the air cleaning invention at the conference "First International Education Forum on Environment and Energy Science" held on Hawaii December 14 to 18.

In deepest secrecy the inventor Matthew Johnson from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen has been collaborating with an investor, INFUSER, in mounting and testing a revolutionary air cleaning device at the industrial plant, "Jysk Miljoerens" in Danish town Aarhus. The reason for keeping the testing secret was that they wanted to be absolutely sure that they could in fact remove the pollution before going public. Now their measurements are concluded and the results are in. And the device actually works.

Natural way to remove air pollution

At the department of Chemistry atmospheric chemist Matthew Johnson invented and patented the air cleaning method which is based on the natural ability of the Earth atmosphere to clean itself. In a process triggered by sunlight, polluting gasses rising into the sky start forming particles when they come across naturally occurring compounds such as ozone. The newly formed particles are washed out of the atmosphere by rain. Once the rain hits the ground, the atmosphere is clean again. In other words the whole process is nature's own purifications works, explains Professor Johnson.

"I have investigated the self-cleaning mechanism of the atmosphere for years. Suddenly I realized, that the mechanism is so simple, that we could wrap it in a box and use it to clean indoor air. This makes for a better indoor climate, and in this particular case it also removes smells from this industrial process allowing the company to stay in business and making the neighbours happy," says Matthew Johnson.

Frutifull collaboration between business and research

For the INFUSER CEO Lars Nannerup the new air cleaning method was a heavensent. For some time he had wanted to establish a cleantech business delivering green and sustainable solutions to industry.

-For INFUSER, collaborating with the University of Copenhagen has been extremely fruitful. We have been operating in an electrifying field between fundamental research and commercial development. This is an area where pure theory and good ideas are tested outside the very competent walls of the university. And we have been extraordinarily successful. We are excited to be able to bring to market this revolutionary technology. We are proud that it is a Danish invention, and we're proud that this invention helps making the world a better and a cleaner place," says Nannerup.

Low energy consumption allows climate friendly air treatment

In scientific terms, Matthew Johnsons patented process is known as an atmospheric photochemical accelerator. The whole process is housed in five aluminium boxes on the roof of the Aarhus business. Compared to traditional methods the new process outshines by removing pollution rather than diluting it, as is the case when we send smoke up a chimney. The method requires no filters, so maintenance is inexpensive. It consumes very little energy, so its climate impact is negligible. Finally it removes the need for a chimney which would have been costly to erect. For all these reason INFUSER and the photochemical air-purification was the right choice for Jysk Miljoerens.

Photochemistry solved pressing problem for environmental business

The company Jysk Miljoerens makes a living separating oil from bilge water in ships, so that the oil may be recycled. For manager Bent Naldal all the parameters were important, but above all he is just happy that the new method has managed to remove the smells from his wastewater treatment plant. Because the smells were threatening to put him out of business.

"It's no big secret, that we've faced challenges in getting rid of the smells originating in our treatment plant. For this reason we were very happy when INFUSER got in touch, saying that they had a solution to our problem. Unlike other solutions that we've investigated to combat smells and air pollution we can now see, that INFUSER delivered. They've solved a pressing problem for Jysk Miloerens, and for the city of Aarhus," says CEO Naldal.

Perfect example of collaboration between industry and academia

For the University of Copenhagen it has been an especial pleasure to follow the collaboration between inventor and investor. The university unit for technology transfer has helped Johnson in the patenting process, in getting financing to conduct experiments and in drawing up the licensing agreement with INFUSER. Unit leader Anna Haldrup feels that the air cleaning technology is a perfect example of how universities can help industrial partners.

'Fiscal cliff' meeting at White House: Will it be 'Lincoln' moment for Obama?

Many Senate Republicans say that with Congress deadlocked on averting the fiscal cliff, it is up to Obama to force a deal. The lesson from the movie 'Lincoln,' they say, is 'the president has to lead.'

The Friday afternoon meeting with congressional leaders at the White House represents a potential ?Lincoln? moment for President Obama as time has effectively run out to cut a deal to avert the Jan. 1 ?fiscal cliff? of spending cuts and tax hikes.

That?s the view, anyway, of many Senate Republicans, back in session this week, who say that, with Congress gridlocked, it?s now all up to Mr. Obama to produce a plan that can both cut deficits and win bipartisan support.

?To get hard things done, the president has to lead,? says Sen. Roy Blunt (R) of Missouri, referencing the must-see film of the year for Washington insiders, ?Lincoln.?

?Virtually every member of the Senate, I think, has seen this new movie on Lincoln, and the lesson of that movie is that to get hard things done the president has to decide he wants something done,? he adds.

In ?Lincoln? the movie, an intensely engaged, hands-on president consolidates Republican ranks on the need for an amendment abolishing slavery, while peeling off enough Democratic votes to win by argument or raw political muscle.

President Lincoln?s effort to pass an amendment abolishing slavery took months. Obama has four days to find a way around some $600 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts set to take effect on Jan. 1.

Moreover, the 3 p.m. Oval Office meeting marks the first time the president has met directly with all four congressional leaders on the fiscal cliff since mid-November. With Congress gridlocked and House Republicans in disarray, it?s not clear that the Obama White House has the capacity or the will to take responsibility for the outcome.

For what it?s worth, Obama is winning the fiscal cliff battle in public opinion polls. A Gallup poll released this week finds that 54 percent of Americans approve of his handling of the fiscal cliff negotiations, compared with 26 percent who back the Republican leaders. While most Americans had been confident that Congress would resolve the fiscal cliff by Jan. 1, that confidence level dropped this week to just 50 percent.

"Blunt's remarks show how intractable this situation is. The GOP doesn't want to take the blame for proposing anything, and instead wants to blame the White House for not doing the same," says longtime congressional budget analyst Stan Collender,a partner at Quorvis Communications in Washington, in an e-mail.

"The White House sees no reason to bail out the GOP, who's approval rating is in the 20s while the president's is in the 50s," he adds.

Lawmakers, Obama in last chance talks on "fiscal cliff"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama and lawmakers are launching a last-chance round of budget talks just days before a New Year's deadline to reach a deal or watch the economy go off a "fiscal cliff."

Obama will meet congressional leaders from both parties at the White House on Friday at 3 p.m. EST (2000 GMT) to try to revive negotiations to avoid tax hikes and spending cuts - together worth $600 billion - that will begin to take effect on January1.

Members were divided on the odds of success, with a few expressing hope, some talking as if they had abandoned it and a small but growing number suggesting Congress might try to stretch the deadline into the first two days of January.

In order to be ready to legislate if an agreement takes shape, the Republican-dominated House of Representatives convened a session for Sunday.

And House Majority Leader Eric Cantor advised members to be prepared to meet through January 2, the final day before the swearing-in of the new Congress elected on November 6.

It "doesn't feel like anything that's very constructive is going to happen" as a result of the meeting with Obama, said Tennessee Republican Sen. Bob Corker. "It feels more like optics than anything that's real.

The two political parties remained far apart, particularly over plans to increase taxes on the wealthiest Americans to help close the U.S. budget deficit. But one veteran Republican, Rep. Jeff Flake of Arizona, held out the prospect that if Obama came through with significant spending cuts, Republicans in the House might compromise on taxes.

The coming days are likely to see either intense bargaining over numbers, or political theater as each side attempts to avoid blame if a deal looks unlikely.

"Hopefully, there is still time for an agreement of some kind that saves the taxpayers from a wholly, wholly preventable economic crisis," Mitch McConnell, the top Republican in the Democratic-controlled Senate, said on the Senate floor.

But the rhetoric was still harsh on Thursday after months of wrangling - much of it along ideological lines - over whether to raise taxes and by how much, as well as how to cut back on government spending.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, the top Democrat in Congress, accused Republican House Speaker John Boehner of running a "dictatorship" by refusing to allow bills he did not like onto the floor of the chamber.

Reid urged Republicans in the House to prevent the worst of the fiscal shock by getting behind a Senate bill to extend existing tax cuts for all except those households earning more than $250,000 a year.

Both Reid and Boehner, as well as McConnell and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, are to meet Obama on Friday.

MARKETS EASE

U.S. stocks sharply cut losses after news of the House reconvening as investors clung to hopes of an 11th-hour deal. Even a partial agreement on taxes that would leave tougher issues like entitlement reform and the debt ceiling until later could be enough to keep markets calm.

"I'm not convinced it will result in a deal, but you could get enough concessions by both parties to at least avoid the immediacy of going over the cliff," said Randy Bateman, chief investment officer of Huntington Asset Management, in Columbus, Ohio.

Obama arrived back at the White House on Thursday from a brief vacation in Hawaii that he cut short to restart stalled negotiations with Congress.

He is likely to meet the toughest resistance from Republicans in the House, where a group of several dozen fiscal conservatives have opposed any tax hikes at all.

But Flake of Arizona said his fellow Republicans in the House and Senate are resigned to seeing some sort of increase in top income tax rates. But they will push back if Obama does not offer spending cuts.

"There will be resistance from a lot of House conservatives to a deal that does that," Flake said.

Strictly speaking, the fiscal cliff measures begin on January 1 when tax rates go up but the House might stay in session until the following day if an agreement is being worked out.

"This January 1 deadline is a little artificial. We can do everything retroactively. We have to get it right, not get it quickly," said Republican Representative Andy Harris.

Another component of the "fiscal cliff" - $109 billion in automatic spending cuts to military and domestic programs - is set to kick in on January 2.

The House and Senate passed bills months ago reflecting their own sharply divergent positions on the expiring low tax rates, which went into effect during the administration of former Republican President George W. Bush.

Democrats want to allow the tax cuts to expire on the wealthiest Americans and leave them in place for everyone else. Republicans want to extend the tax cuts for everyone.

In another sign that Americans are increasingly worrying about their finances as Washington fails to address the budget crisis, consumer confidence fell to a four-month low in December.

Americans blame Republicans in Congress more than congressional Democrats or Obama for the fiscal crisis, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed.

When asked who they held more responsible for the "fiscal cliff" situation, 27 percent blamed Republicans in Congress, 16 percent blamed Obama and 6 percent pointed to Democrats in Congress. The largest percentage - 31 percent - blamed "all of the above."

Skywalker Champ in contention to claim Pinpoint Recruitment Stayers Trophy

Skywalker Champ will be looking to give a tough time to his opponents in the Pinpoint Recruitment Stayers Trophy at Pelaw Grange in England on Wednesday, December 26, 2012.

He has mostly done a very good job in Grade OR competitions, so it will be interesting to see what he manages to do at the end of the day. He is carrying a pretty decent momentum right now and his opponents should definitely fear him.

He has got a very good stamina, so his team will be expecting him to be strong over 590 metres today. He will not be worried about the start and will focus on preserving energy for the ending moments of the race, which is going to start at 13:38 GMT. A victory will earn him a cash prize of ?150 in the end.

There are some other decent runners lined up for action in the race and they will also be looking forward to a strong run at Pelaw Grange. One of them will be Elwick Quiz, who is in a decent form right now and should get the attention of the punters.

She has been awarded the highest odds for victory in the race and will enter the competition with a starting price of 6 to 4. Although, victories have not come with consistency for her, yet she has been able to deliver some fine performances for her team.

Due to this, her confidence level will be good and it will not be a clever idea to take her easy in the race. She has been slotted in trap number three, but that will not be a concern for her, as the overall distance to cover is a long one and she will not be looking to attack in the initial phases.

The M. Walsh?s trained bitch was rated as the favourite to succeed in her most recent Grade OR outing, but she failed to meet the expectations of her team, finishing as a runner up overall.

This suggests that there will be pressure on her, which will benefit the likes of Skywalker Champ, who has got nothing to lose in the race.

The T. Soppitt?s trained hound delivered a very good result in this class last time around and will be determined to do even better this time around.

NCKU's i-Transport robot wheelchair helps riders reach full height

NCKU's iTransport robot wheelchair helps riders reach loftier heights

Those who have to use a wheelchair are often bound to the elevation of the seat if they want to reach something, which isn't fair when some parts of our world are still built for standing height. Taiwan's National Cheng Kung University is redressing that imbalance with the i-Transport. Its robotic vehicle can raise the driver to an upright level and shift them into a better position to grab objects that wouldn't otherwise be at arm's length. The added independence doesn't stop with the assistance, either, as the i-Transport carries its own blood pressure and breathing monitors to keep checkups to a minimum. NCKU hasn't said how likely it is that we'll see the robot enter mass production, but we hope it forges ahead -- the potential freedom would be worth the effort.

IRS: 100M taxpayers face delays without AMT fix

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Up to 100 million taxpayers ? about two-thirds of all filers ? won't be able to file their 2012 tax returns until late March if Congress doesn't adjust the alternative minimum tax by the end of the year, the Internal Revenue Service said Wednesday.

Congress routinely adjusts the AMT to spare millions of middle-income taxpayers from steep tax increases. But the fix for 2012 is caught up in negotiations over the year-end "fiscal cliff" of automatic tax increases and spending cuts.

If Congress doesn't fix the AMT retroactively to the beginning of 2012, the tax would hit an additional 28 million filers, increasing their taxes by an average of $3,700. Millions of others would face filing delays because the annual fix affects their tax credits.

The last adjustment expired at the end of 2011, and the IRS assumed Congress would adjust the tax again when it set up its computer systems for the upcoming filing season, acting IRS Commissioner Steven T. Miller said in a letter to Congress. It would take until late March at the earliest for the agency to re-work its computers, he said.

This scenario would leave taxpayers a small window to meet the April 15 filing deadline. The IRS, however, would not comment on any proposal to extend the filing deadline, agency spokesman Terry Lemons said.

The AMT was first enacted in 1969 to ensure that wealthy people can't use tax breaks to avoid paying any federal taxes. The tax, however, was never adjusted for inflation, so Congress routinely patches it to keep it from hitting middle-income families.

In a November letter to lawmakers, Miller said 60 million filers could face filing delays, if the AMT is not addressed. On Wednesday, he said 80 million to 100 million filers could face delays. The number grew because of millions of taxpayers ultimately may not pay the AMT but will have to do calculations to make sure.

"That up to 100 million American households could be impacted according to the IRS demonstrates the urgency in which Congress and the White House must reach a reasonable, balanced solution to stopping the fiscal cliff," said Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee. "The alternative minimum tax simply has to be permanently fixed."

Hatch and other Republicans said the AMT issue provides a good reason to vote for House Speaker John Boehner's plan to extend expiring tax cuts for everyone who makes less than $1 million. Boehner said his proposal is a backup plan in case stalled talks with President Barack Obama fail. The bill, which is scheduled for a vote in the House on Thursday, would permanently patch the AMT.

"It gives us 100 million more reasons to pass the Republican plan now," said Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich., chairman of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee.

Obama said Boehner's bill is a poor alternative to serious discussions about a comprehensive deficit-reduction package. Lawmakers from both political parties expect the AMT to be adjusted in any comprehensive deal, if one can be reached.

My escape from Sadness and Grief ~ Christmas 2009

by Maxine on December 17, 2012

This is the second of a series of Christmas blogs which shows my gradual escape from feelings of sadness and grief since my husbands death in 2008.

Challenges

As I look through my diary for this Christmas it?s noticeable that life was much better in many ways than the previous year.

The finances had been sorted, and the marital home had been sold. I had bought a new one giving me and my three children a fresh start and I?d left my job, to spend time healing and being there for my children.

My diary is full of routines to keep the house in order, and some personal routines that focused on improving my own wellbeing, meditation, exercise and daily reading of wisdom and self help literature. I was thinking about painting our home. I love colour, and since it was magnolia throughout, I wanted us to put our own stamp on it.

Feeling Sadness and Grief

I had been in a relationship with another man, who had been a wonderful support throughout the death of my husband and beyond. But our relationship had ended, and this Christmas felt even worse than the year before. I?d lost my husband, and my boyfriend. I felt incredibly alone, and grieving the loss of these two men in my life.

Christmas can be such a happy time when you are feeling good, but I was prepared for an emotionally draining fortnight. I decided to organise a dinner party with some friends in the week before Christmas, I thought it would give me the boost that I needed. But as it turned out, many had already made other plans, and I ended up with a bad cold so I cancelled the dinner party.

My diary says that my parents came over for Boxing Day and yet I haven?t noted a menu or presents received. I clearly wasn?t quite on top of things. There are no other entries in my diary.

I remember that this was the loneliest, saddest Christmas I?ve experienced.

Medical examiner: all Sandy Hook victims died of multiple gunshot wounds

Connecticut Chief State Medical Examiner Dr. Wayne Carver addresses the media (ABC News)

NEWTOWN, Conn.-- Dr. H. Wayne Carver, the medical examiner investigating Friday's massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, said autopsies completed on the 20 children and six adults on Saturday showed they were killed with multiple bullets fired by rifle at close range.

"This is the worst I've seen," Palmer told reporters gathered at Treadwell Park, less than a mile from the school where the shooting occurred.

Lt. Vance distributed a photocopied list with the names and dates of birth of the victims, including 12 girls and 8 boys, most of them born in 2006.

The youngest was Noah Pozner, who celebrated his 6th birthday in November. Josephine Gay, another victim, turned 7 on Dec. 11, three days before the massacre. The oldest victim identified Saturday was Mary Sherlach, age 56.

All of the adult victims were women, aged 27 to 56.

Autopsies on the suspected shooter, who police say shot himself, and his mother--who was found dead in their Newtown home--would be conducted Sunday, Palmer said.

Police have still not released his name. "You have to understand this is an ongoing investigation, with an active crime scene," Carver said.

Carver told reporters that the victims had all been identified and their bodies released. In what appeared to be an uncomfortable moment for Carver, he said all of the victims he had examined so far had all been shot by a Bushmaster .223 caliber assault rifle, one of at least two weapons 20-year old Adam Lanza used to commit one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history.

"This is only the second press conference I have ever done," in more than 30 years, Carver noted dryly.

Lanza allegedly gunned down his mother, Nancy Lanza, at their home Friday before driving to Sandy Hook and forcing his way inside to commence the deadly shooting spree. Autopsies on the bodies of the gunman and his mother are still pending, Carver said.

Before the names of the victims were released, First Selectman Patricia Llodra urged the crush of media assembled at the park to respect their families.

"Please treat out community with kindness," Llodra said. "We need your help on this healing journey."

Earlier, Sen. Richard Blumenthal met with local officials and families in Newtown, but refused to engage in the debate over gun control in the wake of the shooting.

"We're going to have that conversation at another time," Blumenthal told Yahoo! News. "Right now my focus is on the this community, and the families and the continuing shock and grief they are experiencing."

He added: "I can't imagine any job tougher than to tell parents their 7-year-old is gone. It's the worst nightmare for any parent."

The Connecticut State Police released the names of the 26 victims at the news conference. The full list is included below:

(AP) ? All Butler guard Alex Barlow saw Saturday was space and an opportunity to make a play.

So the unlikeliest player on the floor took a chance and made the biggest shot of the game.

When Indiana's defenders failed to converge on the 5-foot-11 walk-on, Barlow kept right on going through the lane, drove to the basket and hit a spinning 6-foot jumper with 2.4 seconds left in overtime Saturday to give the Bulldogs another stunning upset ? 88-86 over No. 1 Indiana in the Crossroads Classic.

"The floater is a shot I work on a lot and I happened to get a lucky bounce," Barlow said. "It was a good feeling."

Luckily for the Bulldogs (8-2), Barlow was on the floor.

The kid who spurned college scholarship offers to play his best sport, baseball, and opted to come to Butler for only one reason ? to learn how to coach basketball from Brad Stevens ? showed everyone he can hoop it up, too.

Stevens didn't hesitate to constantly keep the ball in Barlow's hands after three key Butler players had already fouled out. The sophomore who had scored only 12 points in nine games this season and 18 in his college career delivered with a series of key plays.

Barlow finished with a career-high six points, came up with a big steal that led to a go-ahead 3-pointer late in overtime and finally won it with a shot that bounced off the back of the rim, straight into the air and finally through the net.

Indiana (9-1) immediately called timeout to set up a play but could only muster Jordan Hulls' heave from near half-court, a shot that faded to the left of the basket and suddenly the first college in Indiana to go to back-to-back Final Fours had another school first ? its first win in five tries over a No. 1 ranked team.

The sold-out arena roared as the game ended, and the Bulldogs rushed to midcourt where they celebrated with Barlow.

"I thought he just rose up over Hulls and it looked good," Stevens said. "Don't use this as an excuse to get down on Indiana. I still think they're the team to beat in April. Our guys just played really hard and when it really mattered, they figured out a way."

Butler (8-2) has now won six straight at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, better known as the home to the NBA's Pacers, and four of the last five when this series been played in Indianapolis. The Bulldogs have wins over Marquette of the Big East, North Carolina of the ACC and back-to-back victories over Northwestern and Indiana of the Big Ten.

And Barlow, the surprising star, overshadowed a supporting cast that had strong games, too.

Roosevelt Jones scored 16 points and matched his career-highs with 12 rebounds and six assists before fouling out with 2:03 left in regulation.

Andrew Smith finished with 12 points and nine rebounds and held national player of the year candidate Cody Zeller in check until fouling out just 17 seconds after Jones.

Rotnei Clarke, who transferred to Butler from Arkansas, scored 13 of his 19 points and made three of his five 3-pointers in the second half.

In all, five Bulldogs players finished in double figures while the defense held one of America's most proficient offenses to just 42.9 percent shooting from the field.

"We cost ourselves at the end of the game defensively," coach Tom Crean said after waiting more than an hour to take questions. "They made the plays, there's no question about that. But we made the mistakes on how we guarded them."

The Hoosiers were led by Cody Zeller, who had 18 points, including a layup to tie the score at 86 with 19.3 seconds left in overtime. Victor Oladipo also had 18 points and Will Sheehey scored 13 points off the bench.

But the Bulldogs grabbed 19 offensive rebounds and outrebounded Indiana ? the first team to do that this season.

Clearly, this was not the same Indiana team that won its first nine games by an average of nearly 32 points while shooting 51.5 percent from the field.

"There's a lot of things," said Zeller, who had only five rebounds and four baskets. "We got outrebounded. There's a lot of little things that we have to figure, but we'll get back to work and figure them out."

The difference Saturday was that Butler never let the Hoosiers get away from them ? even when Smith and Jones went to the bench with four fouls midway through the second half.

Stevens reinserted both players with 9 minutes to go in regulation, trailing 57-50, and the Bulldogs responded with a 12-0 run that gave them a 66-59 lead with 4:31 left in regulation.

Butler still led 71-64 when Jones fouled out, and the Hoosiers answered with five straight points from the free-throw line. They finally tied the score on Yogi Ferrell's 3-pointer from the right wing with 6.1 seconds to go, and Butler's Chase Stigall missed a 3-pointer off the front of the rim as time expired.

In overtime, Indiana looked like it would take control when Zeller's layup made it 84-80 with 2:12 to play.

But the Bulldogs again rallied, getting a 3 from Clarke, a steal from Barlow that led Stigall's 3-pointer, and Barlow's improbable winning shot.

"I just figured I would throw it up to the rim," Barlow said. "If I missed it, I knew they wouldn't get a shot off. Luckily, it bounced in."

Worker Happiness On the Rise

The number of employees getting a pat on the back from their employer is on the rise, new research shows.

A study by employee recognition firm Globoforce found that 60 percent of employees are satisfied with the recognition they're receiving at work, up 22 percent from a year ago.

The research revealed the increase coincides with a surge in overall employee happiness. This year, 67 percent of employees said they felt appreciated, up from 61 percent last year, while 64 percent now love their job, an increase of more than 10 percentage points.

"U.S. employers have made incredible progress moving the needle on employee satisfaction levels in 2012," said Eric Mosley, CEO of Globoforce. "These levels of increasing positivity are great signs for companies as we head into 2013."

The study discovered a significant difference in the way employees who receive recognition view their job, compared with those who don't. Of workers who were applauded for their work within the last six months, 78 percent report loving their job, compared with just 49 percent who haven't been acknowledged by their employer.

In addition, 56 percent of those who have received recognition consider themselves highly engaged, compared with only 33 percent of those who don't get any credit for their work.

"Our recent survey indicates a direct correlation between the frequency of recognition and the percent of employees who feel appreciated, love their jobs, and intend to stay," Mosley said.

The research shows that just 18 percent of employees who are recognized for their hard work are searching for a new job, nearly 15 percentage points less than those who are acknowledged.

The study was based on surveys of 742 employees working at companies with at least 500 employees.

Student engineers cook up devices for better cooking

Dec. 13, 2012 ? Recipes can be rather imprecise: a dab of butter, a pinch of salt. But Johns Hopkins engineering students recently learned that maintaining rigid control of cooking temperatures, with less than 1 degree of wiggle-room, can lead to much tastier meals.

Oddly enough, their cooking experiments occurred in an undergraduate course called Robot Sensors and Actuators. Class instructor Noah Cowan, an associate professor of mechanical engineering, assigned his students to tinker with common cooking appliances such as toaster ovens or water heating tools. Their revamped appliance had to operate under the control of sensors, actuators and a microprocessor, programmed by the students.

The goal was to devise a system that could sense the temperature of the cooking medium, trigger steps to get the air or water to a particular level of heat -- and keep it there. The system had to work like the familiar thermostat that regulates a home's heating and air conditioning, but with much greater precision.

Because Cowan himself likes to cook, he decided to mix this high-tech task with some lessons about Sous Vide, an increasingly popular way of preparing food. In the Sous Vide method, the food is vacuum-sealed in a bag and immersed in hot water to cook at a relatively low, but constant temperature, generally for a longer period than in traditional cooking. Proponents say this method produces meats, poultry, fish and vegetables that are more evenly cooked and boast superior flavor and texture. To allow his students to learn more about this technique and about molecular gastronomy (the science of cooking), Cowan arranged for his class to visit the Waterfront Kitchen in Baltimore, where Chef Jerry Pellegrino shared insights.

"We set up the trip to the restaurant because I wanted part of this course to be fun," Cowan said. "But I also wanted to show the students that all of that math and all of that engineering they've been learning could be applied immediately to the world of cooking. I like seeing students learn about the broad application of the engineering skills they've been developing here."

For the course's final project, the 64 students divided into 22 teams and built their own cooking systems. The results were unveiled at a class gathering that was part device-testing time and part potluck sampling session.

A few students showed how to use modified toaster ovens to produce veggie pizzas and "perfect toast." One team devised an egg-cooking system with a basket that immersed its cargo when the water reached the right temperature and lifted it out when the cooking was complete.

But most projects pursued the Sous Vide option, using sensors and other electronic components to control heaters that maintain a steady cooking temperature in a pot of water. This method yielded Chinese dumplings, sweet potato fries, a dessert called Strawberry Champagne, cinnamon apples, shrimp, chocolate malted milk custard for ice cream and some fondue made from melted chocolate chips. Many students praised the Sous Vide approach. "If you keep it at an even temperature, you never have to worry about overcooking," said Steven Lin, a mechanical engineering major who was part of the Strawberry Champagne team.

This vacuum-bag technique also produced evenly heated hamburgers, although the student cooks had to give each burger a brief searing in a pan afterward to make it resemble one of its char-broiled cousins. "We were skeptical about the whole concept," said team member Kevin Keenahan, a biomedical engineering major. "We were afraid they'd be mushy, but they turned out to be really good. I wish I had a vacuum sealer so I could try this at home."

Still, the key purpose of the course was to teach the students how to build and use the "smart controller" that kept the cooking temperature constant. Course instructor Cowan pointed out that these controllers are widely used beyond the kitchen in many industrial applications. In the weeks leading up to the device demonstrations, some students discovered that assembling and "tuning" their sensors, actuator and microprocessors was a challenging task.

In assigning this project, Cowan said he deliberately left a few steps out of the recipe. "I didn't tell them about everything that is likely to go wrong," he said. "If their project worked perfectly the first time, they wouldn't learn anything. Sometimes, a stumbling block is useful. When the students get past it, it's exciting to see the light bulb go on."

Adam Weiner, a dual major in mechanical engineering and physics who was part of the veggie pizza team, said he enjoyed the class. "It was fun to see it all come together in the end," he said. "It was a struggle, and we made some mistakes, but we learned a lot." Sean Bailey, a biomedical engineering major whose team cooked cinnamon apples, added, "We learned to make food for our final [exam]. That's a good thing!"

China, S.Africa suspend Brazil beef over BSE doubt

BRASILIA (Reuters) - China and South Africa informed Brazil on Thursday that they were suspending imports of beef from the world's biggest exporter of the meat following a case of atypical BSE that was confirmed last week, Brazilian agriculture ministry officials said.

Including Japan, which suspended imports on Monday, three countries have now restricted purchases of beef from Brazil while seeking details about the death of an elderly cow in 2010 which never actually developed the disease.

None of these countries are significant buyers of Brazilian beef. Brazil's top customer, Russia, has so far imposed no such restrictions, though it said on Thursday that it was weighing its options.

Brazil has launched a diplomatic offensive to clarify the details of the case of suspected atypical BSE, which it has been at pains to differentiate from regular BSE - known as mad cow disease - which is usually caused by contaminated feed.

Atypical BSE can arise in elderly cattle due to a spontaneous genetic mutation that causes it to begin producing distorted proteins known as prions. The proteins can trigger BSE, which eventually destroys the animal's nervous system, and it is believed humans ingesting beef from a stricken animal can contract a fatal form of the disease.

The 13-year-old cow in southern Brazil tested positive for prions, a result confirmed by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) last week. But it died of other causes in 2010 and never actually developed the disease.

The animal was buried on the farm where it had been used for breeding purposes and never entered the food chain.

Outbreaks of mad cow disease in Europe, North America and Japan in the past decade, following an epidemic in Great Britain in the late 1980s, prompted some importers to embargo shipments and roiled the industry on several occasions.

In April, the United States reported a case of atypical BSE in an animal which never entered the food chain, but the country escaped a backlash from importers.

The Brazilian agriculture ministry's secretary for animal and plant health, Enio Pereira, told Reuters this week that much of the two-year delay between the cow's death and confirmation of prions in its tissue was caused by a logistical anomaly at the laboratory.

Michigan Governor Snyder's evolution on contentious labor law

LANSING, Michigan (Reuters) - Republican Governor Rick Snyder signed legislation on Tuesday that makes Michigan, the birthplace of the United Auto Workers, the 24th U.S. state to enact a "right-to-work" law that limits the rights of labor unions in the workplace.

The signing marked a whirlwind six days from introduction to final approval of the legislation, but a day that Republicans said was years in the planning.

Snyder, a former computer executive and venture capitalist, spoke with Reuters on Wednesday about his evolution on the controversial legislation, which bans mandatory union membership or the paying of dues for private and public sector workers in Michigan except police and firefighters.

The Michigan law specifically preserves a right to collective bargaining, but opponents argue that such laws undermine a union's stability and, therefore, the ability to seek better wages, benefits and working conditions.

Q: What was the moment that took 'right-to-work' from 'not on my agenda' to 'on my agenda'?

Snyder: "Let me give you a little additional background why I said it was not on my agenda originally. It is an issue that I had feelings about. I said I would sign it, if you go back to the earliest of history.

I said it wasn't on my agenda because if you look at it, it's only seventeen-and-a-half percent of our workforce that is unionized. So for over 80 percent of our citizens, this isn't a relevant issue. So we had much higher priorities.

We needed to do tax reform, balance our budget, education reform. Just a very long list of issues. My view was let's deal with those and why go into a very divisive subject matter when it affects a relatively limited subset of our population, a significant number, but not a huge percentage.

I'd taken that (position) consistently for a long time and then summertime came and during the summertime, labor leaders decided they wanted to put a ballot proposal together.

They started collecting signatures to do something that became Proposal 2. They called it collective bargaining, but if you really looked at it, it was a massive overreach into Michigan's constitution. And, at the time, in the summer, I said, 'Please don't go forward with that. Please don't finish your petition drive and ask to put this on the ballot.'"

Q: Who did you tell that to?

Snyder: "Actually, I did that in an open meeting. That was a meeting between labor and management. There's a labor-management council that has both company people and labor people and I went to give them a talk and I specifically brought this up on purpose, to say, 'Please don't go forward with this because you're bringing up a divisive topic overall which is the whole topic of labor affairs that is first going to be on the collective bargaining issue.'"

Q: After that meeting, what was your feeling of what would happen?

Snyder: "I was concerned that they were going to continue, but, again, in good faith, I wanted to make sure I said my piece. And Proposal 2 was soundly defeated. The citizens spoke that it was an overreach into our constitution.

But, as soon as the (November 6) election ended, the dialogue on 'right-to-work' just really ramped up. So the divisiveness was starting to go on ... ."

"It had become a divisive issue. If the divisiveness was going on, my view is, part of being a good leader is (to say) 'OK, let's do something about it,' rather than to stand on the sidelines and watch people fight. OK. Now it is appropriate to say it is on my agenda. I came out a week ago or so and said it is on my agenda.

Q: What do you think about the way Senator Patrick Colbeck and Representative Mike Shirkey have gone about building a coalition for "right-to-work" legislation in Michigan?

Snyder: "I appreciate that, but to be open, I actually didn't encourage them to go ahead. I was aware.

That goes to part of the discussion point here which is to say this didn't pop out of the blue. 'Right-to-work' has been an active issue in Michigan for years. It's been relatively active in the last two years. In the last few weeks, it's been extremely active.

So, when people say, 'Did people have their chance to have their say,' I don't know how you can be a Michigander and not have had awareness that this was an issue or the ability to talk to a legislator if you desired to do so."

Q: When was the last time you spoke with United Auto Workers President Bob King?

Snyder: "I probably spoke to him (last) Wednesday."

Q: Had you already made the decision to go ahead with legislation?

Snyder: "I can't remember precisely which conversation. But I was pretty open to Bob, telling him during this process we were having dialogue.

The unions played a really important role in Michigan's history. And people flocked to join the unions in the last century, the middle of the last century.

You fast-forward to today, the way I look at it is shouldn't they present the same value proposition, and if they do, people should be excited to join, and if they don't, should they be forced to give them financial contributions to contribute to the cost of that if they don't see any value?

I don't believe they should be forced to do that. I believe they should have the opportunity to do that when they see value."

Ping G15 Hybrids Will Get You - Fitness equipment Classifieds

Free Classifieds Health & Fitness Fitness Equipment

Once you have them, with its gleaming head sticking out the end of your bag like a lightning rod, the Ping G15 Hybrid is going to instantly improve your status on the golf course.

The Ping G15 hybrid, says the makers, is engineered as a high-launching, forgiving alternative to long and mid irons. And the good news is that right now there are discount for golf customers online on different products including the G15. Stability and forgiveness are increased by using a large toe pad to provide the G15 hybrid with a much more iron like weight distribution that helps to significantly increase the MOI of the ping g15 hybrids compared to the G10. The design also helps to increase accuracy of the G15 and reduces dispersion on hits across the entire clubface. The G15 hybrid looks much like a driving iron, but with a shortened, curving black head. The head design is very much a departure from its previous-generation, fairway wood-inspired G10 counterpart. The sole is mostly flat and clean, with the weight pads, the signature PING logo, the loft of the club, and the G15 stamping being the only markings visible on the polished sole.

The G15 hybrid might be that perfect blend of iron and hybrid that changes some players' minds. Instead, think of this hybrid as being more like a driving iron, similar to the hybrids made popular by Adams. Perimeter weighting is provided by a large internal toe pad in order to provide forgiveness and assists in locating the center of gravity low and close to the face for a high launch and low spin. Again, the g15 hybrids looks much like a driving iron, but with a shortened, curving black head. The thickness of the face is immediately visible, as a couple of millimeters of grey steel face extend at the crown. Looking down at the hybrid at address, the club maintains a clean appearance, though the offset may throw you for a loop. The color, along with the flat, uncluttered sole left me very happy with the overall appearance of the club and should please most traditional players.

Today we are going to have a look at the big dog of the bag, the PING G15 Driver. The ping g15 driver is engineered for golfers seeking a maximum forgiveness driver that delivers distance and accuracy. Its 460cc titanium head is longer front to back and features PING?s patented ultra thin crown technology. A larger face is designed to increase ball speed and provide consistency across the entire hitting surface. The new PING-designed TFC 149D high balance point shaft allows for a five gram increase in head mass which results in higher ball speeds and an increased moment of inertia. The club head is finished in a dark color that is very subtle and does not distract you at address or during your swing. The crown of the club is set with the trademark Ping alignment aid, a reversed crescent moon. For those of you who are bothered by offset and draw bias in a club, you will be happy to know that the G15 sets up pretty neutral and looks quite square at address. There is a draw bias version of the G15 for those of you looking to help ease a slice.

All in all, my overall experience with the club was great, as it's very long and very forgiving. I'd undoubtedly recommend it to anyone looking for a great hybrid.
