Cautious about Cancer | ElevenNews

Salt Lake City native Wendy Castleton says she knows there?s a first time for everything. At her first skin cancer screening test, Castleton says she knows a little vitamin-D can keep her body healthy, but too much can lead to sunburn, sun spots, wrinkling, and even cancer.

With a neighbor who had some spots removed from her body, Castleton says that was a good reminder to get her back checked out. ?I used to go out when I was a teenager every day and lay out, but now I?m a lot more cautious. You know, I wear sunscreen. I got out in the sun occassionally, but I wear sunscreen. I still love the sun,? Castleton says. Having kids of her own also prompted her to protect her skin as much as she can.

The Utah County Health Department hosted a free clinic for skin cancer this past week. They offered screenings for low-income or uninsured men and women. Health officials say it?s a good way to check any suspicious moles, freckles, pimples, or scabs that never heal. Even when clouds linger, and temperatures drop, the sun still shines, and that?s what health officials say can harm your skin.

?I think people don?t realize how much sun they get, especially when it?s cooler. When they?re exposing skin, they?re not feeling the heat of it,? Dr. Sean Smithson says. That?s why Smithson recommends that people check their skin at home, using the ABCDE?s- asymmetry, border, color, diameter, and elevation.

When the sun calls for outdoor activities, the best to prevent the rays from damaging your skin, is to cover up and protect the body.

?Use your sunblock. It takes a little while to put it on, and may be inconvienent, but it can do a lot of good,? Smithson says.

The next skin cancer screenings will be held April 25, at the Utah County Health Department on University Avenue.
