How to Socialize your Parakeet
The term ?parakeet? refers to a large number of small and medium-sized parrot species. One?of the most common parakeets is the budgerigar (or ?budgies?). Parakeets make wonderful pets and even more so if they are well-socialized. But by properly socializing your pet parakeet, you can help it adjust to its environment, and be comfortable with other humans and animals.
Introduce Your Young Parakeet to New Things
It can take a lot of patience and dedication to socialize parakeets and the best way to start is while they are young. The first year of your parakeet?s life is the best time to introduce many things it will be exposed to as part of its surroundings. The socializing process is constant since your pet parakeet will likely be learning about new things every day. How you introduce these to your new pet will make all the difference on how it will react and accept more changes throughout the rest of its life.
One of the first things you introduce to your parakeet is the food you give it. Parakeets can be picky eaters and are known to refuse to eat pellets, fruits and veggies because they find them strange and new. While young, feed your pet bird a variety of healthy bird food so it will soon become familiar with them and not mind eating them.
Teach Your Parakeet to Accept Changes
Parakeets that are not socialized may not understand change and can develop psychological problems. Teach your parakeet to accept change in various ways. For example, you can periodically move its cage to another part of the house, such as from the living room to the backyard. Make sure these spaces are secure and free from drafts before moving your bird. You can also rotate its toys in the cage to keep it from being bored with always having the same toys.
Teach your Parakeet to be Independent
More often than not, parakeets can become so dependent on their owners that they will only thrive when they are with them. Teach your pet to preoccupy itself with toys, other household members, and other stimulants. Use the radio or TV to keep them entertained with the sounds. You can position the cage near the window so the bird can look at what?s happening outside. Make sure it does not fall on direct sunlight or drafts. Bored or stressed birds can begin to self-mutilate and start plucking their feathers.
