Small Businesses Interested in Renewable Energy Invited to UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.?? Representatives of a competition for small businesses focused on renewable energy will visit The University of Alabama Wednesday, Feb. 20 to discuss its program that offers potential seed funding, mentoring and ?business boot camp? opportunities.

Area small businesses are invited to campus to hear a presentation by MegaWatt Ventures from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in room 110 of UA?s Alabama Innovation and Mentoring of Entrepreneurs Center, said Dr. Dan Daly, director of the UA center.

MegaWatt Ventures, a group funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, will showcase and answer questions about its upcoming Renewable Energy Competition, Daly said. In an effort to focus regional resources to empower the Southeastern U.S. into a clean technology super-region, the competition is expanding to Alabama, according to its organizers.

MegaWatt Ventures is a $100,000+ prize competition that provides seed funding, mentoring and business boot camps over the course of six months to enable companies to?compete in a grand finale event.

The final forum enables?highly competitive small businesses to pitch their technology and business model in front of a panel of judges, comprised of institutional investors as well as energy industry executives.

Eligible companies for the competition must employ a local university student and be headquartered in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Puerto Rico, North Carolina, South Carolina, or Tennessee.
