Finding your tribe- by Kimberly | The Wellness Works

I?ve heard this term ?finding your tribe? a few times in the last 3 months, once by Amena here who is LOHAS savvy and a wellness innovator, once by online health experts in a video, and yesterday at a large organics trade show by the CEO of a food brand. Its got me thinking and realizing that I?m one lucky health coach in Shanghai because I have a wellness tribe, a nutrition one, yoga one, healthy food and cooks one, a fitness tribe, aqua aerobics one?..quite a few actually. The word ?tribe? sounds, well tribal, like something in the jungle, but a sense of belonging is important to all of us on an individual and community level and it?s a great choice of word. I know Shanghai is often a place for not belonging, feeling isolated or overwhelmed, well what if you are missing out on amazing people, new social groups and fabulous gatherings???

I know I am a people-person and love connecting and bringing people together, but for those who find ?finding a group of like minded people? not so second nature, I have some tips for to share and suggestions to make on finding YOUR healthy tribe;

  • Get online and searching for support in your social (healthy) life, for example a yoga studio, personal trainer or health coach (we have a tribe just in that category), or a dining club or the Shanghai vegetarians club (you don?t have to be vegetarian to join)
  • Don?t make excuses. Nor be lazy! There are plenty of healthy resources in town
  • Try a few different groups and activities out. For example water sports, yoga, or cooking, so you can broaden your horizons and check out the options
  • Pick up something you used to love to do again, for example raw food, or tennis or painting or meditation
  • Learn something new. Our minds evolve and like to be stimulated, so by attending workshops, joining large scale events or special talks you might get inspired and at the same time add value to your existing knowledge about health topics
  • Challenge yourself and add variety to your routine- don?t go down the usual drink and eat too much at brunch path (and don?t deny it), spice up your life with a detox, or eating at a healthy caf?, or buy some fresh produce and cook yourself maybe!
  • Sleep earlier. These healthy tribes tend to start the day and ?party? earlier :-)

In Shanghai there are plenty of groups, clubs and organisations to satisfy your eating, drinking and business networking needs, there aren?t however as many obvious healthy tribes until recently. If you are after nutrition, food, healthy cooking, organics, holistic and alternative health care, fitness, weight loss, social sporting groups and like-minded people then look no further we should be able to help in our network at The Wellness Works.

Don?t ditch your friends, but go out and find some new healthy friends to add to your circle and life. Build health and healthy people around you and eating brown rice and drinking green smoothies will be normal and without judgment, I promise.
