Romney Gets it Wrong on Immigration - Teplen Law Group

Faced with the sudden realization that courting a ?whites-only? electorate and coming-out hard and fast on immigration just won?t cut it, Mr. Romney, the presumed Republican nominee for president, has suddenly decided that finding a solution to the immigration morass is a ?moral imperative.?

Naturally, skeptics have questioned the timing of this change in strategy, since it was only a few short months ago that he insisted that ?self-deportation? was the best solution for any undocumented immigrant residing in the US; that and a 2,660 mile fence between here and Mexico.

?Mr. Romney has also categorically refused to take a firm position on whether, as President, he would repeal President Obama?s DREAM act, granting undocumented youths the opportunity to stay in the US, without fear of deportation. Yet he, somewhat conveniently, qualified his tough, ?no amnesty/no free tuition? stance during a speech to Latino voters in Florida last week.

Addressing the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) conference in Florida, he vowed to eliminate immigration backlogs and seek to reunite immigrants with their families; (a position surely at odds with his opposition to ?chain-migration.?) He also promised to provide legal status to any graduate who held an advanced degree from a US university. For immigrants, ?who have risked their lives in defense of America,? he promised to, ?staple a ?Green-Card? to their enlistment application.

The language of Mr. Romney?s speech, in which he sought to broaden his appeal to Latino voters, would lead some to believe that undocumented immigrants are permitted to serve in the military. This is simply not the case.

?If Mr. Romney had done his homework, (which you may have expected of him, given that he wants to be president in November?) he would know that only US citizens; US nationals; lawfully present persons from Palau, Micronesia, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands; a select few, determined by the military to be ?vital to the national interest? are authorized to enlist; and of course, those who already have a Green-card.

Perhaps Mr. Romney is confused about US law, in general. Although he waxes poetic in his support for immigrants, very few undocumented youths would qualify for legal permanent residence. In actuality, almost no-one would be eligible under a Romney initiative.

Mr. Romney?s detractors argue that without the courage of President Obama in addressing the plight of undocumented youths, Mr. Romney would have continued to stonewall efforts seeking immigration reform.

The Obama campaign has circulated a video entitled, ?Why won?t Mitt Romney give a straight answer??

Well, apparently Mr. Romney has, finally, found his voice and with it, something positive to say about immigration. I guess we shall have to thank President Obama for that!
